Welcome to 'Trying To Conceive Over 35'

Hi Ladies..

Headaches are still here.. I do have a diagnosis though. I have something called a chiari malformation type 1 if you want to look it up. So long story short my dream of being a mom is on hold for now (temporary) while I get a specialists opinion and figure out where to go from here. I really only have 2 options deal with the pain and progressive debilitation or have brain surgery. Neither option sounds good to me! UGH! I'm meeting with a neurosurgeon that specializes in chiari malformations and I'm hoping to get further tests and more information about it and my options. It's so bizarre because I've had funky symptoms that I never knew were due to this chiari malformation, like sleep apnea, insomnia, fatigue, hoarse throat, balance issues, of course the headache, concentration issues, memory problems, neck pain, nausea, there are a lot of symptoms I don't have and some of these I've only just started having in the past month or so. I guess the more recent ones could be due to the debilitating migraine.

Sams.. I'd give this Dr's plan a try. Blood sugars and insulin do play a role in hormones. So getting that under control is a good plan. The Lupron flare is also known to help speed up the cycle so we won't stim as long. That will also improve your egg quality, so my FS says.

BabyW.. glad the pain is gone! I don't know much about the things you are talking about but yes vaginal is best! I read somewhere that it transfers beneficial bacteria to the baby. Amazing! Wishing you a speedy and safe delivery and a healthy little boy!

I'm so sorry to hear this, but maybe it's a welcome relief to you to know what's causing all of these ailments. I've never heard of this but it sounds like a crappy way to live life. You're such a vibrant person I can only imagine what you'd be like if this wasn't plaguing you right now.

What else can they do to treat this?

Nothing beyond treating each individual symptom or having surgery. The issue is pretty rare.. 300,000 people in the US. There is something in the base of the scull called the cerebral tonsils. They are part of your brain. They sit above the area where the spinal cord meets your brain. Normally they stay in the scull, but in chiari (named for the guy that discovered it) the cerebral tonsils fall into the shaft that holds the spinal column and holds your spinal fluid. If they descend further than 5mm you supposedly have the disease but I've also read that it really depends on if you are symptomatic. Here is the worst part. Since the cerebral tonsils aren't supposed to be there and they are putting pressure on the spinal fluid and spinal cord it can lead to nerve damage. It really depends on the amount of pressure on the spine.

So right now I'm on topamax, a migraine preventative, but it takes 2-3 weeks to start working. The other symptoms I've just been dealing. Thing is that my quality of life has gone from decent to nonexistent in a matter of months. So in my mind I'm already thinking surgery. Maybe if the topamax starts working and I start sleeping and getting back to normal but right now I'm thinking let's correct this and get me back to being me! Providing that the surgery is considered safe and there us a reasonably high percent chance of fixing the issue and alleviating the majority of the symptoms, and preventing additional damage. I'll know more next Friday after meeting with the neurosurgeon. I
may end up in NY for the surgery. One of the top centers for this surgery is in Great Neck, NY! But for now I'll get some tests and information close to home!

I'm sitting in my Dr's office in Great Neck as we speak!!! It's a town over from where I grew up and 2 from where I live now, literally 10 min from me. The fact the specialist is here isn't surprising. Let me know what your plan is.

Don't be sore if I say this, but maybe not being prego currently is a blessing in disguise. Everything swells in pregnancy and the changes to your spine and back is incredible. If you saw all the discs out of alignment in my back and my pelvis you'd wonder how I am getting around.

Hopefully surgery is not too complicated and recovery is swift. Have they told you what's involved with both?

I haven't really gotten that far. Except that I have read that the surgery is called decompression surgery. I've been told that I shouldn't rush to surgery by my primary care physician. But the way I'm feeling I don't know what else to do! I can barely even focus! Plus my mental capacity appears to be getting worse daily. I will know more in a week. Until then I think its going to be a rough week.

Can I suggest an anti-inflammatory diet in the meantime? It will help with the brain fog and swelling you have. Try to stay as alkaline as possible in your foods. No coffee, sugars, and for the time being veggies esp green leafy veggies are your best friend. It might help your symptoms.

Alicatt- This is bizarre! My brother had chiari malformation type 1. He's lived with it for 6 years. It's very serious, but he lives with it everyday. The chiari institute is located in New York. Surgery is really not a good option its only 50 percent chance of alleviating the symptoms. Wow very weird. Your only the second person I know with Chiari. Stress and inflammation from activity, foods and so on can prompt the migraines. They do subside.. but also there.

Alicatt- Just reviewed the rest of the posts. Do your research Chiari Institute was one of the best, but then they were sued and they found that they sent many people for surgery that didn't need it. Not only that, the surgeries did not increase their quality of life. My brother was very lucky that he opted not to have surgery. It was around that time that they were performing unnecessary surgeries. The initial diagnosis is based on severe migraines. The symptoms do subside. Diet and exercise play a role. My brother lives with it everyday. He said that he finds that drinking coffee helps his symptoms subside. Some days he can't even move, but generally he works 3 jobs and has 3 kids... so he's does have a good life.

WOW! Small world! The research I did suggests it's possibly hereditary, have you been tested? I'm not really leaning one way or another right now. I just want to see a specialist and find out how bad mine is. It was so bad today it hurt to move my eyeballs! My quality of life is very low right now. Only good thing is my pups! Not that I'm down, just totally worn out. Not sleeping, in pain all the time. It's a good thing I'm not a single mom to twins right now! We'd need round the clock help! Everything happens for a reason, maybe I was meant to deal with this first!

BW- Oh! Discharge and sudden energy are AWESOME signs! :) Are you nesting? :)

Sams- what is the deal with your glucose, what is your average? I know they use Metphormin (sp) to help conceive AND lower your glucose. Are you on that?

Ali- has the topomax started to work yet? WTH? Why does it have to take so long? :growlmad: And wow, you'd have to travel to get the surgery done but definitely getting the right surgeon is paramount.

Yes I'm nesting. Been cooking, cleaning, getting organized and running around getting things for the house like door mats since all this snow has made for wet shoes and wet floors! I'm having sharp pains down low from baby hitting nerves. It catches me off guard and if I'm around others it freaks them out. Discharge is good but not really losing mucus plug, no bloody show, no diarrhea, so not thinking its going to happen soon. Dr said I'm very soft and about a fingertip or so dilated. My friend was 100% effaced and 3cm and went the next day...from pains at 4pm to having the baby at 9:41pm and she's 5lbs below her pre prego weight after only 2 weeks. It's maddening!

Headache is a little better. I've managed to be very productive this weekend!
I switched up the meds I've been taking, which has helped keep it under control. I don't think the topamax has kicked in yet unfortunately :(
Prior to my diagnosis I invited friends for a party, and I'm hosting the family for 10 days for Christmas. So between the dinner party for 12 next weekend and the family arriving I sure hope my head stays manageable!

BabyW.. very exciting! I'm sure it won't be too much longer now!! When is your next appt?

I'm happy you have some relief! Can anyone help you with the dinner party? 12 is a large group to cook for.

Next appt is scheduled for day after EDD. I've been in pain on and off for more than a day now. Shooting pains in my pelvis and now back. If this continues I may go in earlier. Baby is hitting nerves I just hope it's productive in thinning me out and dilating more. I can feel him lower now.
I could be like this until past my EDD. They won't induce until 41+1 and if I'm not dilated or effaced more it will be likely a c section. I have to be patient I know, but this pain literally makes me double over and yell ouch. I freaked out the check out girl at Bed Bath & Beyond. Thankfully it passes. I swear this is natures way of getting you to think that the intense pain of labor is worth it to just get the baby out. Clever Mother Nature.

Ali can you use acupuncture for this problem? Can it help your symptoms?

What's everyone doing for Christmas??

Thanks BabyW!
Yes, my mom is one of the 12 so she will be helping! Luckily the house is all decorated and I'm all set. I am just doing a casual dinner with a sparkling punch, eggnog (both non-alcoholic) with alcohol on the side. Then wine and beer. Assorted cheeses, olives, crackers while we open gifts and have our drinks. Then lasagna, Caesar salad and Caprese salad with garlic bread and my pastry chef friend is bringing desert. My mom is bringing a fruit salad too. She'll help with the salads and the bread and setup. I posted pictures of the house all decked for Christmas if you go check FB.

I finally got my MRI results today and the radiologist must have been blind in 2007 it's pretty clear to me that I had this back then and looking at a normal MRI my spinal cord was showing signs of degeneration in 2007. It is way worse now  I think that I will have no choice but to have the surgery or deal with worsening symptoms. Of course I'm going to wait to see how the specialist interprets the MRI, as I'm not a chiari specialist (yet) :haha: I'm also not an MD. Just my observations of my MRIs and a normal one.

Let us know how you are feeling.. hoping and praying you have a smooth and uneventful delivery!

Let us know how the dinner party was !

Afm baby Jack has arrived!!! Will add birth story later but he's 7lbs 14oz, 21 inches and an absolute love bug. He looks like dh, blonde hair and blue eyes. It's been a rough recovery, leaving hospital tomorrow. Water broke Monday at 4pm had baby Tues by c section at 4:07 pm. Had some complications so stayed the full 4 nights in the maternity ward to recover while under close medical supervision.

We are over the moon in love with this baby boy and still hasn't fully sunk in yet.

Will fill you all in on details later. Happy Holidays to all of you and your families. Xo

Welcome to the world Jack! Glad you are both doing well. Sounds like it didn't go exactly as planned. Get some rest and when you have a moment, tell us the whole story, with a picture of Jack!

Babywhisperer- So excited for you! Welcome Jack!!! We are over the moon for you! I'm sorry to hear about the complications, but I'm sure we would all love to hear about it! Send us pics!

I'm super excited to find this. I'm 37. Tic baby number 5. DH and I are very nervous. Hoping to find support, knowledge, and assurance with everyone here.

Hi Ali (and all other girls),

I was curious how you are doing? I hope you are doing well; I know last time you mentioned that you had an MRI done, and I wasn't sure if you were proceeding with surgery or what the next actions were?

Well, I finally gave in and decided to do IVF. Fortunately, our doctor suggested the chromosome testing (CCS), which is what we wanted to do in the first place. I will start the cycle around the 14th. I'm quite nervous about the hormones because apparently I have 17 healthy follicles, which is great, but also means I could produce quite a few. This is where my cousin had her complications.

We'll see how this goes. I've never been an optimistic person, so I never try to get ahead of myself...I'm just preparing myself to be disappointed. Heh!

Babyw- You must be really busy with Jack... Hope you will post soon.

Alicatt- Any plans for the future?

Sweetrabon- Welcome!!!!

Melly2- Very excited for you! Do you know what your protocol calls for?

AFM- Babyw I visited Dr. Spandorffer and he was so nice. He thinks I have a chance, he was quite optimistic. So now I'm confused. Do I go with Dr. Palter or Dr. Spandorffer. Dr. Spandorffer want to do a hysteroscopy. Has anyone done this? Any experiences? He also wants me to see a endricronologist because of my glucose level. Any thoughts?

Yes, currently I'm on the pill. I've already had the ultrasound and saline tests. On Monday will get the HCG done, and then IVF class. My husband and I are both getting genetic blood work done along with a work up on everything else. I will then start the shots for about a week. Collection occurs, and then they freeze and send off to NJ for CCS testing. Hopefully we get at least one good one out of that bunch, and then we implant.

Good luck with yours as well!
