I will be hugely pissed if i get a letter to say my code is changing due to underpayment, how is it my problem that someone at their end cant do their job properly :dohh:

This will be on Tuesday :mail: I very much doubt lol.

Hope I've overpaid! Doubt it though.
It's really unfair on people who have underpaid, it isn't their fault and now they will be sort of money
x

it doesnt apply to me as i am self employed and avoid paying tax :)

ffs i better not get a letter :grr:

and if i do it best say they're
giving me a rebate

:dohh:

blooming idiots!!

We wont be paying anything if they say we owe money , they tax us enough as it is , they can kiss my ass!

brilliant yet another cock up and im betting OH gets a letter saying hes owe them money :hissy: hes changed jobs twice in last 3 years and had 3 or 4 tax codes

If you change jobs do you stay on the same tax code

If you change jobs do you stay on the same tax code

It depends on how quickly your new employer gets all of your paperwork, you usually go onto an emergency tax code where you pay a higher rate when you first start a job

I think the people most likely to be affected are those who arent on the 'standard' tax code (which is something like 645L ) and/or those people who have multiple (more than one job) or irregular incomes. If your situation hasnt changed in the last two years then you "shouldnt" receive a letter either way

It is a bit unfair that they expect people to pay it all back over 12 months though. Havent people been under/over paying for two years?

found this :

When do people find out whether they have over or underpaid tax?
HMRC is writing to those involved between now and Christmas. The first letters should arrive on Tuesday.

Who is likely to be affected?
You might have under or overpaid tax if:
Your employer used the wrong tax code, you started a new job and had an emergency tax code for a while, you only worked for part of the year, you had more than one job at the same time, you didn't tell HMRC right away about changes to benefits you got through your work, your circumstances changed - perhaps you were made redundant or became self employed and therefore your income reduced, other income like investments or rental income reduced but you didn't tell HMRC or HMRC made a mistake with your tax.

Over what period will people be paying the money back?
Most people will have any underpayment taken out via their tax code during the next tax year - 2011-12.

Does everyone have to pay back the money?
HMRC can consider writing off the underpayment in certain limited circumstances. Basically these are if HMRC had been provided with all the information necessary to get their tax right and the taxpayer could have reasonably expected their tax deductions to be right. In these circumstances they need to contact HMRC and ask for the underpayment to be reviewed on that basis.

What if someone can't afford the repayment?
Talk to HMRC - it says it will do all it can to help if some one genuinely can't pay.

What happens if someone refuses to pay?
If a tax debt is legally due it should be paid. Again, HMRC says those with any concerns should talk to them.

How far back will the taxman look?
The current reassessments refer to the past two tax years: 2008-9 and 2009-10. If, however, you believe you may have underpaid tax in earlier years, HMRC told Channel 4 News they will reconsider your case on demand.

What advice does HMRC give to people who are worried about whether they will get a letter?
There is no need to worry, best wait to hear from us, read the letter very carefully when it arrives and contact us with any questions.

Well from 2008-2009 my OH only worked half of that year because he was made redundant and from March this year he has worked 4 different jobs and his tax codes have been all over the place and varied from 647L and BR/X
Confused.com

BR is emergency tax as far as I can remember...he should get a rebate for that,if he hasnt already.xx

No he hasn't yet, still being emergency taxed too!
Does my OH has to ring the tax office to tell them he's on an emergency tax code or will the agency sort that out?
This tax malarky confuses me

I was on emergency tax and I had to send my P60 off at the end of the tax year to ask them to let me know if I was due a rebate, they sent me a cheque, but sometimes they will do it in with the wages.xx

He can ring the tax office and tell them that he is still being taxed at basic rate (BR) but ultimately I think the agency need to sort it  He may not get a lump sum rebate for that. He may just have reduced tax payments for the remainder of the tax year if the amount is small enough to be balanced in the next 7 months
