Ive read on there that you cant use it if your entitled to married couples allowance, it makes it not add up right IYKWIM

"Don't use the checker if any of the following apply:

•you're entitled to claim Married Couple's Allowance
•you're aged 65 or over and get age-related allowances
•your income is over £100,000
•you have other taxable income such as income from dividends and trusts
•you receive taxable State benefits
•you're self-employed"

So i dont know how to check if your married

I'm not entitled to it am i?I don't even know what it is..lol...ooh this is confusing..xx

 Ive no idea! lol .. i just saw in your sig you were married and thought all married couples got it but i really don't know :headspin:

Who can claim Married Couple’s Allowance?
If you were married before 5 December 2005
If you are married and living together and at least one spouse was born before 6 April 1935, the husband can claim Married Couple’s Allowance. We reduce your tax bill by 10 per cent of the Married Couple’s Allowance to which you're entitled. The actual amount depends on the husband's income.

If one of you dies, or if you divorce or separate, you'll get Married Couple’s Allowance for the whole of that tax year.

If you married on or after 5 December 2005 or are in a civil partnership
If you are married or in a civil partnership and living together and at least one spouse or partner was born before 6 April 1935, the person with the higher income can claim Married Couple’s Allowance.

We reduce the claimant's tax bill by 10 per cent of the Married Couple’s Allowance to which he or she is entitled. The actual amount depends on the income of the spouse or civil partner with the higher income.

Does that mean only older people get it?

So does that mean that one person in the couple has to be born before 1935 to claim married couples allowance? So confused:wacko:

yes...

and....apparently I'm living in the dark ages and married persons allowance for anyone born after 1935 no longer exists and hasn't for many years.

Never let me post in one of these threads again. I'm too clueless for words.

LMAO Snap!! :hugs:

It's easy to work out how much tax you have to pay. Work out your annual income, subtract you personal allowance:
2008-09 2009-10 2010-11
£6,035 £6,475 £6,475
Then times what's left by 0.2 (i.e. 20%) and that's how much tax you should pay each year. If your annual salary is more than £37,400 (this tax year) then anything over that is charged at 40%. HMRC has all this info on their website including for the past two tax years.

Ring and speak to Sebastian...he is nice,he tells you how much you are due back..
I asked about the maternity leave thing, and he said ANY tax you paid on that if you were just on SMP will be refunded..Yay!! :D
xx

That will only apply if your earned nothing else the whole tax year. SMP for 9 months adds up to about £6000, just under the personal allowance. If your maternity leave is staggered over two tax years or you got additional pay from your employer you're likely to have needed to have paid some tax.

Yeah..Mine started in April 2009 and finished Jan 2010 :) xx

Nice! Mine will be like that next year. Sucks for tax credits (but then who will be getting those anymore anyway?) but good for knowing where you're at with money. Last time I was half and half right across two tax years.
