Will you be sitting under the letterbox on Tuesday?

I didn't get anything. Would the fact that I went on MAT leave in april mean anything

I was on maternity leave for most of the tax year that they said I overpaid on..which is why I'm expecting to get a cheque for something like 50p...
xxx

Nothing here but a friend's son had one...

you won't believe this...

Poor poor bloke!! :(

OUCH!I saw on the news that they may write it off..not sure how you get them to.x

I think he'll just have to hassle them everyday. There's no way that someone who doesn't have immediate access to 5 grand can clear such a debt my April. It's ridiculous! How could they get it so wrong?

As far as I was aware, they aren't demanding it back right now, they willa adjust his tax code for next year and take it back through his tax then...so he will pay more :(

if its under 2000 you they will just take it out of next tax years tax over 2000 and you have to pay it back in one go!

Oh my god!!Thats terrible!!!Surely they would be able to do something??x

That is completely disgusting!! God I pity everyone who has to do this :( My OH pays over £500 in tax each month as it is, I dread to think how much it would be with this on top!

We didn't get any letter...but heard on the radio you can appeal if they're trying to say you owe them! So worth a try :)

heard on the news this morning that actually very very few people will be getting it written off, you have to prove you sent them certain info and prove they didn't take it into account

Is it not also, that some of these may be out of date? As in the error is more than 12 months old and they have gone over their own deadline?

Hm, prob be an unpopular opinion BUT how could someone not know they underpaid £5000 in tax  You have a responsibility to check your own wage slips and make sure you're on the correct tax band.

But isn't it that people though they were on the right tax code and that its HMRC comp systems that have caused the balls up?X

Blah is right, they work out your tax code but it is also your own responsibility to check it is the correct tax code, they kinda do it as a 'favour' but you still need to check it yourself.

Last year hubby discovered he had been on the wrong tax code (over paying) for almost 5 years, so he had to get alot of info from his bank and provide yearly tax statements etc for all the years that were incorrect, they then reworked his tax code to correct this. So for us we *should* be able to appeal *if* we find he has now under paid as he provided everything they needed, but I very much expect they will do everything in their power to stop it

I guess another way to look at it is ...... if they owe YOU money, would you be happy if they just wrote it off? I am sure most people wouldn't be happy therefore they can't afford to just write off what people owe them

It is a scary & unknown time :(

I didnt get a letter and I phoned them and I dont owe anything thank god
I really cant afford it cos I have gotta move house

I found out my ex was paying to much tax and he got over £1000 back, you could just tell he was paying to much when you compared it
