Would you give your under 5 a fizzy drink?

Nope, he drinks water milk and very diluted apple juice only. Even my 12 yr old SS only has pop/irn bru on special occasions.

I would argue that giving kids diet coke is even worse than normal coke :o aspartame!

Oh god yes, I never give ivy sugar free anything!

Neither do I (with the girls) And I don't have any sugar free for me or DH, either. I'd rather everyone had a small amount of sugar than anything containing aspartame. I honestly believe that stuff is poisonous.

Aspartame is really nasty - I had evidence of that after Charlie had a Fruit Shoot! He doesn't get any fizzy juice (I don't drink it either) but one time he took a huge swig of BIL's Fanta and burst into tears :/ I'm guessing he didn't like the gassy sensation in his mouth!

Aspartame has a really bad effect on me - and since I've researched it, I swear a lot of ailments I used to have, I could attribute to aspartame (but then I drank too much diet fizz, and ate muller light etc)

I don't have it in anything now, and if I do - by accident - I have the most awful taste, and a few side effects.

Erhh... yes.

Not habitually, only if for example (and this has happened to us at least twice) we're on one of our ridiculously long bus journeys, I've got diet coke and J has left his water bottle somewhere/run out before we get to our stop. We bus everywhere, we try to get to Orrell a few times a week to see friends which takes around an hour and a half in okay traffic, if we go to Skem to see my Dad it takes another 20 minutes, if we go to St Helens it's at least an hour, you get the idea. So yeah, if we're stuck on a bus and either of them are thirsty and I've buggered up drinkwise, they have sips of coke. I can't say I'd give either of them their own fizzy pop, not for a looong time. Both prefer water, my oldest really hates fizzy stuff. It's only been the past year I've drank diet coke, I've always preferred water to anything else.

I don't eat anything sugar free either anymore. Its so weird, before Ivy I was absolutely addicted to diet coke and drank like 3-4 cans a day, always used artificial sweetener in tea and ate sugar free everything. But one of my first symptoms of pregnancy was that the taste of anything with artificial sweeteners absolutely disgusted me, now I can taste aspartame so strongly!

I wouldn't give her a can or a whole glass to herself but I've let her try a few sips of sprite before - the bubbles freaked her out :haha: and I offered her a sip of coke but she wouldn't even try it

I don't have kids but I probably would in moderation.

Juice can have just as much sugar as what fizzy drinks can. I bought a flavoured water when I was out the day thinking it would be low in sugar and calories - turns out it was like 3% less than my OHs coke :dohh: wouldn't think it though looking at the bottle!

Although I wouldn't give Ivy much juice either, at least proper juice can count towards your five a day and aren't completely full of chemicals, plus fizzy drinks are often caffeinated.

I give Maria unsweetened fruit juice, only has the natural fruit sugars in (still fairly sweet though but not enough to make her hyper).

Is it sad though that I was disappointed when she wouldn't try the coke? I just really love her facial expression when she reacts to the bubbles :haha:

Ivy's initial facial expression when she tried fizzy water was pretty good :haha: What kind of kid likes fizzy water though? Wish she would stop stealing mine! NOTHING beats a baby lemon eating face though...

Maria loves fizzy water but she still does the weird face thing, its hilarious. I can't get to see Maria's lemon eating face though cos she's allergic, woe is me :(

No- and if I have my way they won't be having it at all. My mum used to let us have it all the time when we were little- the result? I do actually have a diet coke addiction. I drink 5-6 cans a day

So I don't want them having it.

I gave michael lemon (camera at the ready) and he liked it:dohh: no bad face

mine have apple juice and orange juice for breakfast but after lunch time and dinner I try and limit it. I know it can be hard as my son with autism is VERY limited and although he wouldnt like fizzy anyway he does hate water lol so I know how hard it can be. x

Lily can have a little bit of fizzy water so I can see her face, but that's it

No aspartame or squash either. Or caffeine. Or alcohol. Or anything fun :haha:

On the subject of sweet taste aversions- since cutting back on sugar during this pregnancy I was nearly sick when I tried some baked beans the other day. Omg I used to love them but now it's like eating a dessert gone terribly terribly wrong. And ketchup :nope:

No. They've had a sip, but only as a taste.

They have sugar free juice, milk or water.

My DH parents used to ALWAYS have bottles of coke etc... in the house. His teeth are shot. My mum never had it in (mainly cos she couldn't really afford it) I've only ever had one filling.

We don't have it in the house. That is our own personal choice :flow:
