I was just reading my notes in green book, i have been 1/5th engaged the last 2 times.
I always thought that this meant a little engaged, and 5/5 is fully engaged.
Now i am confused as it says next to it its the other way around so 5/5 free, 4/5 at pelvic brim, 3/5 lower but still above brim, 2/5 most below brim, 1/5 or 0/5 is deeply engaged
How do you think it is or understand it to be?

1/5 means your baby's head is really low in your pelvis. It means the midwife can feel 1/5 approx of your baby's head x

1/5 means the midwife can feel 1/5th of the babies head and that the other 4/5th's are in the pelvis.

i was always confused in my first pregnancy as to what way around it was but the midwife explained it this time

ok thanks girls, when i was pregnant with 1st it was the other way around lol

It depends what she said to you when she wrote it down or whether she wrote palpable or engaged next to it.

My midwife told me when she wrote the figure down that it meant how much of the baby's head she could feel (3/5) therefore meaning I al 2/5 engaged.

Hope this helps!

Yas as Gem said.. some midwifes write it the wrong way round! They are meant to write how many 5ths they can feel above the pelvis, but some right down how many 5ths are engaged! Most confusing if they dont mention which way round they do it!

I had the same midwife all the way through my last 3 pregnancies and she did it one way for the 1st and 3rd but the other way round on the middle one!!

oh and it has a arrow next to it pointing down ? does that eman anything?

It usually means how much of the head they can feel. I always get them to confirm what they write so im not confused. Plus i see different people all the time so they write different things.

Generally if there is an arrow pointing down next to it it means 1/5 of the babies head is engaged - so 4/5 to go until baby is fully engaged.

I was SO confused by this and had a long chat with my m/w at my last appt!! She said that there is no 'right' way and usually they will put an arrow next the numbers to indicate which way they are doing it.

So currently mine reads 3/5v (sorry couldnt find a down arrow so a v had to do!!!) which means Boo os 3/5 engaged into my pelvis and my m/w can only feel 2/5 of her head

The other way to tell is by how much pain or ouch and waddle you have, if it says 1/5 and your walking like John Wayne and feel like baby is digging his or her way out with a blunt spoon then they probably mean they can only feel 1/5 of babies head and your nearly fully engaged, If you feel fine and have no waddle and hardly any cervical pain then they probably mean only 1/5 of the head is engaged.

mine never did this! just said your babys head is here, the way shes done it sounds right tho
