Hiya,im due to start college in january doing my access to nursing and midwifery and was wondering if any1 else had done this?

What sort of things do you do on the course?I have a rough idea but do i do placements at the hospital etc or is that when i go to uni?

Also, this course is going to take 18months and then hopefully i can go to uni but what course do you do when you are at uni and for how long?

Really exited about doing this and just want to hear from others who have done this :D

Thanks xxx

you will do placements in various settings ie, mental health, different wards.
after you have done this you can apply to do either the diploma in nursing which is 3 years long or the degree which is 4 years i think.
you can opt which area you want to go in, adult, child or mental health, some places still have learning disabilities.
ive not done the course but went to uni to do diploma
if you need anymore help please feel free to pm me
x
oh and good luck :)

This is something I'd love to do once I've had all my kids. I just hope I wont be too old by the time I've finished! lol

Hi Hun,

I didnt do the access but I am a nurse...though I qualified a while ago..........I trained with some people who did the access and I believe they all differ slightly. As for uni you split 50% of your time in lecture and 50% in placements.
There is a move to make all nursing courses degree leval, but at the moment you can do a diploma, advanced diploma or degree.at the uni I went too they all took 3 yrs but the degree had an extra dissertation.
You have to decide if you want to specialise in Adult, Mental health, childrens, learning disability or midwifery from the beginning though often the first year you all learn together.
I LOVED my training, lots of different placements...and I still love my job and feel priviledged to do it.
GOOD LUCK..... am sure you will love it, xxx

You can also do a masters degree in nursing science which takes 4.5 years.

Nothing else to add except that midwifery is ALOT harder to get on then nursing, but u can do a adult nursing course and then do a 18 month conversion to midwifery!
