Breastfeeding Support - 6 months and beyond!

im planning on joining this group full time in a few months as i intend to feed till christmas (9months) at least but probably longer as at 11 months we will be moving out to Oz and i would like to be able to settle at least one of them on take off and landing on the plane lol and he really doesnt like a dummy lol

Hey all - I'm going lurk here too! I'm not quite 6 months yet but it feels like I'm feeding a 13 yr old with some of the comments i get sometimes! I've ever intention of letting her selfwean (as long as its before her 12th birthday of course lol)

I'm getting sick of people asking me if she can have a bottle of juice or cows milk yet - no matter how many times I reply no I still get asked again next time I see them! grrr!

Once they see you have no intentions of listening they get bored with asking and saying. I been here and heard all the sayings. Why dont I do this and that, like they seem to think there's a problem with breastfeeding so they try and give me ways to wean when I am quite happy??and if they give you stick imagine what they would say to me! :wacko:some here think you only breastfeed for the first few days thats all its important and dosnt matter if you do it or not its all the same. Scientists apparently make things up about breastfeeding :winkwink: all money apparently even though breastfeeding costs no one a penny!

Hi everyone! :hi: Great idea for a group!

I'm Anna, and I've been breasfeeding Alyssa for 17 months and we have no intention of stopping yet! Going to let her decide when she's ready to stop. Don't think it's doing her any harm ... just look :D

no she looks really healthy! I havnt seen another bf baby same age as william!

I have never posted this in here before in case someone takes offence but its not meant that way but apparently breastfeed babies are better looking. Wouldnt want anyone thinking I was saying their baby is ugly but its the skin and eyes the bm has looking well and I can see that when I look at peoples avatars who breastfeed,.

eat well look well, i should take a drink of it sometime lol but think its to late for me.

Hello all

Am still feeding my babes - he is 14 months, nearly 15. Have just discovered am again pregnant ( not sure how far gone yet as havent had a period!! )

My baby loves BF, am sure its more now for comfort rather than nourishment!!!Self wean - I dont think so!!!!

So am just going along with it for the time being while we all enjoy it!

Thanks Dragonfly :) I do think there is something to it when it comes to the skin. It's just so soft and smooth and creamy. Just GORGEOUS.

William is stunning. Glad to see another 17 month BFer here!

Dam I would love Williams skin! he certainly didnt get that off me anyway! I see that in a lot of bf babies to. eyes are lovely and clear also.

congrats loopylou I am preg to, just taking things as they come and my son has no intentions of self weaning as he is a boob monster still. I am typing and he is on now. He still gets loads of feeds day and night and isnt really that fused on the solids! I rather he had more solids with bm but just likes boob a lot.

Alyssa still loves BM... I work full time so she normally nurses when she gets up, then in the evening, before bed, and during the night (she still wakes at least once). On weekends or any days off I have, she nurses whenever she likes.

She LOVES her food too though

Yeah, I wish I could say Alyssa had inherited her beautiful skin from me!

The resident HV at my local baby group was commenting the other day on my LOs skin and how BF'd babies always seem to have the same gorgeous skin and it's something you start to notice when you see a lot of babies. This HV is really supportive of 'extended' (rubbish word) BFing and is always dragging BFing mums with very young babies up to me, telling them I'm the 'gold standard' for going beyond 6 months. It's quite embarrassing to be honest but I really hope it encourages people...

I've heard it mentioned often about BF babies' skin. And I've just found this on Dr. Sears' website https://www.askdrsears.com/html/2/T020400.asp Thought the other points were great to note too!

BREASTFED BABIES HAVE NICER SKIN

Many pediatricians who have developed a keen eye and sense of touch over years of examining babies report that they can often tell by the look and feel of an infant's skin whether or not the baby is breastfed or formula-fed. The skin of a breastfed baby often has a softer, smoother feel. There is also less delineation between where the fat under the skin ends and the underlying muscle begins. The skin of formula-fed babies tends to be rougher with dry, often sandpaper-like, patches. Breastfed babies feel more solid. Researchers report that the subcutaneous fat in breast and formula-fed infants actually has a different composition.

When aimee was little,a grandad who brought his grand-daughter to one of our playgroups was commenting on my friend breastfeeding and how you can tell the ones that are breastfed just by looking at them.Im going to try and find a pic of her around the same age as your lo's

Dragonfly, how are you finding BF while pregnant, if you don't mind me asking? We're hoping to start TTC baby #2 in the next month or two, and I am hoping to be able to continue BF Alyssa.

Lets all drink our milk! lol I think i would needs lots and lots though,.

bf while pregnant is fine with me only the belly is getting bigger and more awkward to get a big toddler around in a chair, bed is still easiest way to feed him though and he loves it that way to. My nipples get sensitive sometimes but have plenty of linsinoh for that. I dont know how I will manage with 2 of them but I will somehow . i dont think William will self wean, even though he has plenty to keep him distracted as sometimes he is off looking at things in the middle of a feed he still comes back for more.

I started off very sore bf with cracked nipples and bleeding and all! i think that went on for months as no doc or hv knew what it was, goes to show how much they know here about breastfeeding. I think now this past few months past that have been easier it does get easier as you go along it also depends on how much time you can give to. I dont work so have loads of time to feed where as some mums have to and expressing isnt easy I have 3 pumps and I just cant get any out with them and yet my son does.

Also my hv still dosnt have a breastfeeding size chart for my son and i have no idea why! she says he is severely underweight and it peeds me off to be honest as when I checked it on kellys mum he is bang on. I hope for next one she has them charts or I will have to say sometihng I dont want her puttying down he is underweight when she has a formula chart.

All true in that link I have another up in bf section that has more in it. Also hearing is better due to less ear infections. Shape and size though a lot have argued with me on all this saying theres no difference but I think there is like Dr sears.

heeey! can i join? fab group!

I have been BF LO for 10months now soley, hes had no formula at all(dont intend to) and of course weaning which we BLW.

I love it, and so does he...hes only on morning and night now...and if he wakes at nite he'll have a wee snack lol

At the moment im having a battle with myself about stopping at a year or not...but im just taking it as it comes :)

I often wonder if part of the reason I am overweight is because I was formula fed. I have a horrible habit of binge eating at night right before bed. My mom tried BFing with my older brother but he refused to latch so she quit in less than a week. With me she never even tried. :( So for me, breastfeeding Emma and BLWing her is my best effort to keep her away from being overweight later in life. I eat healthy for the most part but nighttime is when my craving for sweets comes out. I have no idea why.

Emma does have amazing skin and coloring. I've had random strangers comment that they've never seen a baby with such beautiful skin tone. Which was a weird comment I thought. :haha:

yeah I was formula fed to and over weight, vert hard to get off and battled with weight for years. Everyone was formula fed in my family and all over weight and claim it canht be that. I have coalics disease also and my other half has chrons which both can come from formula later in years. So we didnt want william to have anything like that as we do suffer.

breatsfed babies can work off fat faster as the lining is in tact in the intestines, this is why my son has no fat on him and is perfect in my eyes not over or under. ALso formula has whay powders which bulk babies up in it and brestmilk dosnt. Easier digested. They know when you stop eating to, we would binge eat and thats put on so much weight with me. :(

peolple always comment on how lovely my son is, looking and his temperament is so well behaved,. my landlord just cant stop saying how nice he is, not a bother out of him he is totally different from any other child in my family! which unfortunately make them all think he is slow and stupid.
I seen kids snapping stuff off him and he dosnt care, just looks and lets them get on. And he passes his balloons out of little girls in the shopping centre when he gets them and shares his food all the time. so caring.

Well had lunch today with a couple of friends I've not seen for ages, and had the normal question and surprise with regard to me 'still' bfing! They were nice though, one of them ff her lo - didn't fancy bfing at all, had done it with her older daughter for a few weeks and just didn't enjoy it - and yet said well done for me doing it for so long. Was nice to have someone with a different view to me still complimenting my/mine and Ws achievement iykwim?!

Will try and put pictures on my computer this week of W and share them :)

Interesting articles about the skin of BF babies too, W does have lovely skin - well, he's all lovely! - and people often comment on how happy he is and secure and sociable, so obviously not making an ultra clingy baby (another thing bfing does apparently!).

xxx

yeah apparently mine will be gay from breastfeeding and clingy from co sleeping and he is none of them! all from people who never done any of these things! William seems the same as your Lo to very confident and sociable, bubbly and happy. I wish I could be like him he is always smiling and amused but this tends to point to something wrong with him so I am told. I wish people would see him like all you would and not like theres something wrong he is meant to be like that for once i think i done something right so please admit it! lol
