Breastfeeding Support - 6 months and beyond!

oooh, can i join in too.

Our little boy is 8 months now, and he seems to love is mummy milk time. We've been weaning for what seems like ages and in the last week or so he's just started to accept some solids, so although we plan to continue to bf for a while yet, the pressure to express at work during the day feels like it may get easier.

I work full time as a teacher and i've been getting some negative comments from collegues for still feeding, i put it down to a lack of understanding and try to hold my head high. it's none of their business i know, but their support would be appreciated. And how many times have i heard the phrase... if you put him on formula he'll go through the night... aghhhhh! So yeah, he doesn't quite sleep through the night, we have at least one wake and although i'm a bit of a zombie at times, but i wouldn't not feed him at night.

that's a little about me and our boy... who knows how long i could chat to you guys on here for, it's quite exciting!

Lucky you!! Emma and I have been stuffed up for 2 weeks now. :dohh: I get a cold with almost every season change. And Emma gets them with me so we've had about 4 colds since she was born. 2 of which weren't bad and only lasted a few days but the last two have seemed to last forever.

Ick! I hate colds... I'm getting one! I woke up with a sore throat and my head is killing me! Kayleigh seems fine though, Jake and Mark haven't got it yet either! Hope you guys feel better soon! :hugs: and that darn scrapbooking thing sure is addictive!

Hope you feel better soon too! Ugh! Tis the season for colds I suppose. Your new siggie is SO cute! I need to get some new online scrapbooking done. I haven't updated my facebook in so long. I have pictures back in september that still need put on there. :dohh:

Nimbus- Welcome!! I'm sorry your coworkers are less than supportive. It's a shame people aren't more positive about breastfeeding for longer than average periods of time. I think all of us in here have dealt with at least one person who disagrees. For me, it's some family that kind of roll their eyes at me but it isn't enough for me to stop. :haha: We plan on going to at least 2 and than seeing what happens from there. :D

Cleckner- hope your stuffy noses get better soon!

Nimbus- welcome! Kira is 14 months old and I still have to pump at work once during the day. It seems I was asked frequently if I was still bf when she was between 6-12 months old, but now either people assume I'm not, or they got used to my answer of "I'm going to continue until she doesn't want it anymore" :haha: So I hope in time your coworkers will accept it and not make you feel strange. I have a large bag that looks like a lunch cooler that I take to the lactation room, and I always have random men asking me on the elevator if I packed a big lunch that day, LOL. Little do they know I have my milk in the bag. :haha: Do you have a private place at work to pump?

Kaybee Gabriel is 16 months and still 19 pounds and up until 14m was deffo mostly on boob.
At 14 months though Im not sure what happened but I got the feeling he was ready for night weaning and I would send dh in with some water if he cried, he cried maybe once a night for 2 nights (dh was knackered ffs I used to get up 4x!) and now sleeps through.
Also at 14 months he clicked about solids and eats loads more but still no wiegh gain, but seeing as I am the champion (read: only) diaper changer in the house I reckon the food juist drops right thru him!

My son still wakes for feeds god knows what i will do with two at me at all hours of the morning.

here is william today. Notice he has no front teeth at all just stubs. Rest the teeth are great I have no idea how that happened we guess it was from teething as he would grind the front ones.
Also tried to cut his hair and never again! i was gutted , darren done the fringe and i done the back but i want his curls back :nope: So i am not cutting it any more. He can have a nice trim by a professional but none of our crap jobs any more. No hair dressers down here have child seats in them and i dont think he will sit in one but my mate does my hair i just will call her and she will come out.

Hi Nimbus, and welcome! :hi:

I don't pump, but I do work full time, and have done since Alyssa was 6 months old. I've had my share of ignorant/unsupportive colleagues asking too - but it's none of their business. I think that most now either assume we've stopped BF or that they're tired of hearing me reply "Alyssa will stop when she's ready".

Alyssa still wakes at least once a night and nurses. Yes, I'm a zombie. Yes, I would love it if she slept through the night. No way on earth would I change the fact that we're still BF though!!!! She's just one of those individuals who doesn't need a huge amount of sleep and isn't the soundest of sleepers :dohh:

haha our kids would get on well! I wouldn't change the fact I breastfeed him still either I see it does good and its worth it. I hate nosey arses that feel the need to question why you breastfeed and I guess some or your work colleges are like this to.

Hi, not ventured in here for ageeees! William still slowly taking less and less and very very rarely bfs to sleep now which I'm proud of really, to me it shows he's growing up, part of me is a bit sad too though! Went 24 hours the other day without a feed, and nearly drowned the poor lad when he did feed!

I am now offering him cows milk form a beaker in the morning and he's happy with that unless he's still a bit dozey and wants boob! If he gets upset then I offer a feed but he doesn't take much when he's on and won't ask very often now either. I think he would prob go to bed without a feed now too but want to keep that for a bit if I can, thats one feed thats very useful when staying away from home!

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

William went through a phase like that but thats when he started walking, had more things to do but came back to boob in the end. Plus theres teething to.

we are still going ive stopped expressing for now as hes taking the boob fine although it does seem that its caused him to be awake at night instead so i might just try adding that last feed back as a bottle feed to see if helps as we arent getting alot of sleep and i can express that one after he has gone to bed anyway it doesnt bother me,

hes teething and my nipples r getting sore and im wondering if im up the duff again cant test for a week though which is driving me nuts

I love how you do yours! Your pictures are all so cute! I don't feel too bad, but Kayleigh is still running a little with her nose, but she has been teething hardcore. She is also pulling her ear, which Mum said can come from teething, since she has no fever or pain when I move the ear, but I think I might still take her to the hospital if she keeps at it. She has been biting everything the poor girl!

:hi: !! I've got a few comments lately since Kayleigh is going to be 10 months in 4 days, but I just go on with my day. I understand your feeling though! I know when my Mum tells me to use more bottles, or buy formula, she is old enough it bothers me... she is fine with breastfeeding, but thinks by now we should be on formula. I will stop bfing when she wants :) Again, :hi: Welcome!

mum2J&K- Awww :cloud9: LOVE the new siggie. It's such an amazing picture! I wish I had more professional pictures of Emma breastfeeding. It's always just me snapping them while feeding her. :haha: Your boob looks massive next to her tiny little head there.:winkwink:

I dont think any one still knows I breastfeed in my family but then since I only speak to my dad briefly and the rest dont visit and ignore me I have no idea.

WIlliam understands what my bump is, he knows theres a baby in there as when I ask where baby is he pulls up my top (this is when he is feeding so he is lying to my side) points at belly and gives it a good long rub so delicatly . Even when a baby comes on tv or peoples sigs here he can see he points at my belly and says "ba" , Amazing what they understand!

it is pretty cool what they understand , Nate has just started saying EJ's name its soo sweet

Hi everyone :flower: just found this thread and hoping someone can give me some advice, i posted in the b/f section but got no answers back.

I'm going back to work in 5weeks. Chase will be 8 1/2 months. I still want to b/f as much as i can which realistically will be a morning and night feed so i'm unsure as what to do with the afternoon feeds which i won't be there for. Currenlty Chase will feed at 10ish, lunchtime and 4pm so i'm presuming i need to switch him to formula for these. How do i do this do i just drop one feed, then another etc? i suffered with blocked ducts in my right boob and have had mastitus twice so i want to know the best way of adjusting my supply to avoid this.

? Also he wakes at different times every morning but once i'm at work i'll have to give him his morning feed at the same time every day, how do i do this? Thinking of just feeding him now at the time i'll need to which will be about 6.30 but the problem is if he's woken at say 5 he won't want a feed at 6.30?

Help, has anyone been through this?

Thanks x

Why would you need to switch to forumla cant you express milk with a pump and put it in fridge for whoever feeds when your at work?

I hardly get any from expressing, the most i can get is 4oz so i seriously doubt i would be able to get enough for 3 feeds.

ah same happened to me when i tried with a pump, babies have a special way of getting out,. I dont have a clue how much baby would drink from a bottle though as I only had to try it when I had cracked nipples as I was in so much pain. HUmmm. Unless you combi feed i know some do that here?? just the after noon feeds. Not sure about blocked ducts but it will lower your supply as baby misses them few feeds.

The 4oz is from hand expressing, using my pump was ever worse :haha: took me about an hour to get 2oz when i tried it.

Hate the thought of him having forumla, dam money and having to return to work.

I'm just worried if i just go back to work and miss them 3 afternoon feeds out i'll be in so much pain, so don't know how to make it easier for me and Chase as it's going to be different for him too. Was thinking of offering a bottle at say the morning feed to begin with for a week, then the next week the lunch time one for a week then the week after that the late afternoon one? No idea if this is the right way to go about it? x

hun Ej seems to be getting less interested in his lunchtime feed atm as he is taking more solids chase is the same age so should be getting ready to drop a feed anyway, just a thought, when i put Nate onto FF i used Hipp Organic formula partly as it was cheapest a the time and also most natural you could try offereing a sippy cup if he wont take a bottle
