Debate: - Gun Laws and Self Defence

Sorry but I find that a bit irresponsible. Toddlers don't understand that guns kill and trust me, they get into EVERYTHING.

I'm glad guns are generally illegal here but thats a whole other debate!

I did say inaccessible! I've heard of many cases where the child thought it was fun to play with a gun found UNDER A BED. First of all: are you fing kidding me...under the bed? really? (stupid ass parents!!!!!) Secondly: How old do they have to be to understand? I will start teaching my daughter everything I can the DAY she is born, I will give her as much knowledge as she can handle. Until the time comes to teach her about my guns, they will be inaccessible to her!

EDT: (Blah11) I would REALLY like to get into that debate, I hope it come up. I'm not looking to argue, just debate, I like hearing the other side of it.

Where will you keep it? I mean it has to accessible enough for you to grab if you hear an intruder. IDK, toddlers can climb!

Yes i do believe you should be allowed to defend yourself in your own home if you are confronted by an intruder just as you should be allowed to defend yourself in the street if you are confronted by an attacker. I think that mostly everyone would defend themselves if they ended up in that horrible situation.

The guildlines for the prosecution service as it stands now seems to be pretty clear that violence against an intruder is understandable in the heat of the moment and the victim of the intruder wouldn't face prosecution in most circumstances but trapping an intruder and purposely attacking them, attacking an intruder after he/she falls unconscious or attacking an intruder after they try to escape would most likely face prosecution. Even if the intruder dies the victim of the intruder still would not face prosecution if they acted in reasonable self defence.

^ I'm glad!

They can't climb everything!

I haven't decided if it will be in my closet or if I will find a different spot for it. I may have it with me by that point. (I'm certified to carry a gun with me at all times.) It's also not a problem until around 6 months. Crawling time, then it has to be higher than she can reach...so on and so on.

ok this might be a naive question but I don't know what it is like to live in oklahoma

Do you really feel that unsafe there that you feel you need 3 of them? What do you use them for the rest of the time

sorry just interested lol

While I agree I find it irresponsible to have a loaded gun in the house not locked up while you have a child in the home,

I agree that locking it up defeats the purpose of having one in the first place for self defense... but where could you put it that is inaccessible enough for a child to get at it but still accessible enough for you to get at it in an emergency...

To each their own but it'd be a worry on my mind that my 5 year old would be snooping for say Christmas presents in my closet or something and find it.

Keeping in mind Canadians don't really have guns around like that lol... I guess I just don't understand

I suppose you could stick a gun in a little cabinet area built into the wall with nothing nearby to climb, at about 6 feet high. I wouldn't feel comfortable having a loaded gun in the house, but it can and has been done safely.

i am hoping the next couple of debates are boring topics so i don't miss anything interesting while on honeymoon lol

It's not about feeling unsafe I need 3, I got the .22 rifle from my grandfather, it's around 75 years old, collectors item if you will. The shotgun I got from my dad for Christmas when I was...15-16-17...I don't remember. I started trap shooting (you know the Olympic sport) in the Boy Scouts, (I very much doubt most of you have heard of them...even though they were created in England, apparently they don't exist there anymore, I don't know.) I enjoyed it so much that I was borrowing my Dad's gun every couple of weekends to go shoot some more, so he bought me one and we started shooting together.

The Handgun I bought just over a year ago, for protection. I'd rather have it and never need it than need it and not have it!

In our closet we have built in shelf that stands around 6' 5" tall, there is NO WAY a child can climb up and get it!!! Guns' don't belong on the floor anywhere! EVER!

It isn't required that you lock the gun! THAT in my opinion is irresponsible. You just lock the ammunition up! No ammo, no death!

trap shooting ..... is that what we call clay pigeon shooting? (clay disks fly through the air and you shoot them)

I just can't get my head around the fact that people feel they need a gun for protection

Yes

How do you protect yourself?

Here's a good quote for you. "Why do I carry a gun? Cause a cop is to heavy!"

I try to live my life not in fear, thats how i protect myself, I made sure we picked a house/area that i felt comfortable in, lock my doors, thats my protection  I don't feel i need a gun to protect us, a gun in the house would actually scare me more i think and make me more on edge ..... constantly looking over my shoulder because i would be expecting trouble ..... if you get what i mean lol

I do, and I understand your point.

It's not about looking over your shoulder, my Dad said it best to me. "If you live correctly, by paying attention and not getting into trouble, you will never need to use a gun. Be smart about where you go, when you go, and what you do there, but then be prepared to defend your family if trouble comes to you!"

I'm not saying I feel safer knowing I have a gun. I feel safer knowing I have options, because "When seconds count, the police are just minutes away!"

I'm not afraid of fire either...but I have Fire extinguishers...Life insurance, Health Insurance, Auto insurance...

I think the UK is pretty good proof you don't need a gun in the house to live a fairly safe day to day life... the things we see on the news are the extremeties, not everyday occurences, so we wouldn't need guns IMO.

Defo think gun law should be added to the list....

I suggested gun law in that thread but for some reason i never added it to the list  Weird.

I think we should be able to defend ourselfs, if a burglar broke in id be terrified and id send OH downstairs to see what was going on but if i was in on my own id do anything to protect connor, luckily our labrador sleeps in kitchen and i know he wouldnt let anyone get past him so i do feel quite safe.

Yep, they are very much still going. Bear Grylls is the leader person of them all

This debate does seem to be going off on a tangent towards whether or not we should have guns for protection  I understand that law is very very different in America (and Canada), but I would still feel uneasy about having a gun in the house, loaded or otherwise! If you found an intruder in your house, would you go to your gun as the first line of defence? because that to me is not defence, but an attack. You have that gun with every intention of using it (should you need to), but like someone else has pointed out, where do you draw the line? if someone comes at me with just their fists, I would attempt to defend using just my fists. If they came with a knife, i'll use a bigger knife...I am thankful that guns are illegal here, because the chances of a burglar/intruder using one to nick a few DVD's and some games consoles is highly unlikely, and to use a gun in defense of that is, if u'll pardon the pun, 'over-kill'

I Think If I heard someone break into my house then if I was upstairs I would stay there and call the police. But if they tried to come upstairs I would hurt them. My child is upstairs. They have no right to be in my house and If I had to hurt them seriously to stop them putting my child in danger I will
xx
