False positives DO exist!

Oh honey how frusterating... but here is what happened with my daughter...

I was TTC, and was temping. My temps were high and I was on cd 29.I did a HPT and it was a BFN. Cd31 still no AF so I took another HPT... another BFN. I had a dr apt on cd32and she did a blood test on me. It came back NEGATIVE! By cd 34 AF still hadn't shown so I took a HPT again and I got a beautiful BFP.

I had ovulated on cd19 and by cd 32, making me 13dpo and my blood test was still ringing negative. Took until 15dpo before my hcg levels could be detected even by a blood test

there are two different kinds of hcg test, which one did they do, the quantitative, or quality one i am not spelling them right, but one measures the amount of hcg, and the other is just an yes or no answer, and is usually not as accurate. I have never gotten an positive on teh yes or no blood tests. only on the ones that measure the amount of hcg. and with my 2 kids didnt get a positive till 6 weeks along. so there is still hope.

I have heard that drinking some sort of a diet drink, I can't remember which one, can cause false positives.

i'm sorry. i had a false positive (within time limits, etc) on a superdrug test when we were trying to conceive bella. it was so clear it came up on a crappy mobile phone photo i then sent to oh. but i wasn't pregnant, i didn't have a chemical pregnancy, i was 3 months into a 6 month cycle.
i hope you get your true soon.

I had a BFP once on 2 diff tests and was so excited. Double and triple checked to make sure it wasnt an EVAP line. Each time, Test line came up first. Told DH and we went to the hospital the next morning as a last check. They said negative. I was so confused and didnt believe them. I drove to two more hospitals because I figured they didnt know what the heck they were talking about. BFN again. The next night, AF showed. Have been there. DH was so disappointed and I felt sooo bad for misleading him. But I was so sure.

Thanks so much everyone for all your stories. I'd like to think the lab was wrong but I know that is unlikely. Here is where I am currently at with everything:

I called the dr today to see what my progesterone levels looked like. A note was left for me saying "progesterone level confirms that ovulation has not occured in the last week and you are probably about to ovulate and period is a week away"......um that makes ZERO sense! I believe I ovulated TWO WEEKS AGO based on my BBT's....o'd on cd16 which is the case every month. I am having brown spotting today (period is due today). However my darn temp was still high this morning (could be a fluke).

So my question is: lows levels can indicate ovulation having not occured, but does it also indicate that AF is very very close and the level has dropped before AF?? That is the only thing that makes sense to me. I do appear to be starting AF...Verrryyy slowly though.

If that is the case, then so be it. As for the VERY positive test yesterday, I will forever be baffled by that!

I had 3 faint bfp's an a few bfns 5 days late for af an she decided to show face today quite heavy and sore so not sure if it classes as a chemical an if not then false positives definately exist x thinking of you x

Its weird hey! Well I got AF this morning (2 days late) and it's taking forever to actually start properly. I too will never know if it was a chemical because I did a blood test 7 days before Af and it was negative (but bfp). I then did another blood test day before af and it was negative (but bfp!)...so id think if it was a chemical I would have had at least a little hcg in blood between the two blood tests! To make things more annoying I got ANOTHER bfp on frer yesterday. If I had a level of 3 or something I doubt FRER would be picking it up.

Well back to trying I suppose. The question is will I be able to trust pregnancy tests from now on? They are messing with my head big time.

Well I'm still up in total agony def something different going on x I will def be very wary of tests now think new leaf will be only test when at least more than a week Late gonna be hard but don't want to go through this again and would rather not know x so strange frer still positive I hope you are ok x x

I hope you feel better soon Mother nature can be quite cruel sometimes. Perhaps you are in pain today because it is late and your body has to work a bit harder to get it out. I hope you didnt have a chemical......its one of those things you just cant be sure of sometimes.

I am thinking like you are i.e. I dont want to test early anymore. I will at least wait until the day af is due from now on. Yep, its definitely hard but at least I am more likely to believe a BFP if my period is late. AND it will probably be more of a dark BFP. Next time, I will definitely be taking my test into the doctor because I think she thinks I am going mad and seeing lines that arent there

Nope, they were the pink ones. They weren't even internet cheapies either. The FRER 3 pack cost me $18.00 and I bought another brand called Forelife which were around $10.00.

I bet you're pregnant then if you got several positives within the time frame the tests said.

Blood tests aren't always as accurate as they say. So I've been told and such
