i want a box for my baby's formula powder, is this recommended and if so, from what age? like getting a tupperware box.
its not so easy using it right from the makers bags so if i got a box to put it in it would be much easier!

Didn't want to read and run, we get ours in boxes so there's no need to transfer. Can't see a problem as long as it's a clean, dry container.

We transfer ours from the bags it comes in into a tupperware container. Just make sure it's airtight and that you completely empty it before washing and refilling it so that you don't get stale powder at the bottom.

The powder isn't sterile when you get it in the manufacturer's box, so it shouldn't matter if you transfer it, as long as it is kept dry/airtight. I would sterilise the container first, and then each time before it was refilled.:flower:

That's what we do too.

I always leave it in the tin, but like jacs said steriliese the container and make sure it's really airtight.

Sorry... what do you mean by it isn't sterile?

Well the powder itself isn't sterile, It might be before you open the packet but obviously once you open it, germs can get in. Which is why you should make up bottles using very hot (near boiling) water. That way the powder is sterilised in the bottle and the made up formula will be sterile.

It should be fine in a clean container..just a note though..babies are not suppose to have powdered formula until they are 4 months.:hugs:

Oh I didn't think of that lol... I didn't use powder with my son, I used the cans where you added water and I am breastfeeding my daughter.

I didn't know that either! I have a friend who has been using the powder off and on since her daughter was born and she is now closer to 5 months, will be on the 20th.... every time she used the powder her baby couldn't poo easily.

A lot of babies in the UK are fed this way from birth. Without it my son would have starved to death. I'd be interested in hearing your reason for stating that.

Did your son have problems with the liquid stuff?

You can buy it premade but it costs twice as much and the manufacturers state powdered made up with water is fine from birth. So still puzzled as to why ;)

Oh I remember it cost more for the liquid compared to the powered! I was shocked! I always had a hard time with the measuring so I went with the liquid with Jacob.

My son is on powered formula since he was born...maybe there are different guidelines for powered formula in Canada.

I think the 'no powdered formula before 4 months' is because formula is available differently outside the UK, isn't it? I think I've seen that you can buy it in liquid form for you to dilute (not like the ready made cartons, just like powder but liquid lol) in the US. I assume that the powder in the US is of a different formulation to the powder in the UK.

ETA - I think it also may have something to do with the fact that people tend not to routinely sterilise bottles in the US. Here in the UK we do but if you weren't, you'd probably want to take extra steps somewhere, I imagine that's why you'd use sterile formula (I'm assuming that the liquid stuff is sterile).
