got summit i didnt expect last night :):)

our great dane is from a rescue home for her breed. They were VERY thorough . Homechecks, our expectations, how much we thought it would cost to feed her etc. Checker brought a dane with him so we could really get a feel how much space they took up! He said they turn down more applicants than they accept. Too easy to buy /sell a dog.

i know. some people are SO flippant about it all..
i have rehomed dogs because their owners were getting a new sofa... becasue they were going on holiday and didnt want to pay for kennels.. because they had a medical condition that they didnt want to pay vets bills for...
its disgusting!!!

That one sickens me the most ... there is so much financial help available for people with sick pets who cannot afford to pay the bill

Id pay every penny i had to make one of my dogs better if they were sick :(

I remember once seeing a little mongrel with a massive tumour on his tummy and i begged for them to let me take him home so he could at least die happy and taken care of :(

I can understand wanting to put ur childrens safety first but i think its very irresponsible to just get another puppy.
Although u know the breed well it doesnt mean you know every dog of that breed! As others have said you get "dud" dogs.
What if this new one gets aggressive and misbehaves? Will you just rehome again??

I think all Bailey needed was a bit of love and attention.
My uncle is a breeder and has only ever had one dog returned; after 2 weeks the father took him back because his children were teasing the dog. Pulling his ears etc!
Do you know your kids werent doing this for sure?

my boxer bailey has sub aortic stenosis. its a common condition in boxers, and caused by indiscrimate breeding. (hes a rescue, i didnt buy him from his 'breeder') hence my hatred of some 'breeders' it cost me £57 a month in medication, £180 every 6 months for him to see the cardiologist, £40 every 3 months in vets check ups, and £50 a month in suitable food for him.... none of this is covered by his insurance as it was pre existing when i adopted him,
thats A LOT of money, and things are tight here at the min with me on mat leave etc.. but never in a million years would i rehome him becasue of it! its not his fault.. and when i took him in, i took that with him, and any other conditions that should arise! thats all part of the serious considerations you have to make when you take a dog on.. its not just something you decide on a whim, or something that someone surprises you with!

very good point. i once had a woman contact me about rehoming her dog. he had apparently bitten her child. no if this is the case i wouldnt have rehomed the dog... but i went to assess him and he seemed to have a good nature to me... a little nervous, but i saw no aggression. i took him for a vets check up, and you know what.... he had a crayon wedged down into his inner ear.

id bite someone that did that to me!!

that made me cry  my mum paid a fortune for our family dog, she had diabetes and needed constant checkups and insulin, had an operation for a cancerous tumour on a mammory gland. That operation alone cost nearly 1K. Our dog was PTS 2months after (in September this year) as she went blind and her diabetes wouldn't respond to insulin any more and the cancer has spread BUT them last 2months where worth the money as she was family! I miss her everyday and I'd of paid the earth for her to be healthy

ooh we know our dog boo is a scottie cross, and we think she is crossed with patterdale, what do you think?

i dont think all puppys should go to training i didnt take mine i acctually went brough a book and did it myself and now hes fine.. can even leave him on his own outta his cage without him going mad.

books are great.. but you cant socialise a dog thru a book.. classes are invaluable just for the socialising side as much as training itself.

trust me u cant get a more social puppy than my bruno.... hes having a love affair with my MIL's dog and my mums dog... ones a female and the other is a male.... lol he doesnt need to be anymore social trust me hehe

Same here, my dog got run over by a hit and run and id rather b in thousands of pounds debt than to not have her at all and yeah its disgusting to give away a part of the family just because of vet bills, shocking what some ppl do!

er...how olds your OH? :dohh:

Maybe he should be a bit more responsible!

if my OH came in with a puppy, he would be taking it straight back out again...

Maybe its just me, but, to me dogs are little people and they deserve time and attention...

my oh really wants a dog and im not keen i think zanes too young right now but i can imagine him walking thru the door with a dog.

then i can imagine him sleeping in thr car for a week after that lol

I have had to help put to sleep all manner of animals who's owners 'couldnt afford them anymore or the treatment they needed' yet they pull up in the vets surgery with the brand new car, and all dolled up.

We had to put to sleep a 6 month old border collie pup 'holly' she came to us as a christmas stray, she was sooo lovely and she was rehomed with a friend of one of the receptionists. A month later they came in to have it put down because it was 'aggressive' it was 6 months old and tiny! the owners were scared of it. Every single one of us nurses refused to help Euthanase the pup. But it had to be done as the receptionist would have told the owner if we hadnt done it... even one of us wanted to rehome with someone more experienced... she was PTS that afternoon.

My dog has bitten my son, over a bone. it was a stupid accident which we are now aware of, but i havent rehomed daisy, we know e have issue and we will work round them. When we decided to get a dog it took a couple of months looking at different breeds, ages, puppy? older? rescue? pedigree? heinz 57? we were home checked and the fact we had a kid was a big factor, we went to meet daisy first with the WHOLE family... and we took her home.. if we felt she wasnt right we signed an agreement to only return her to the rescue and no where else.

Having a dog is a big responsiblilty, Daisy needs a good couple of hour walks daily and mental stimulation..

Did bailey get 2 hour walks? will this dog get long walks? a bored dog will become destructive and can be aggressive too. small dogs are the worst.

I couldnt do your job Hypnorm, id spend most of the day crying

I really notice a difference with my dogs behaviour when he doesn't get out for proper walks. There was a period there of about 2 weeks where he wasn't getting out as much (OH took him out but OH takes him out for crap walks imo!) and Max does get a bit more hyper/bored when he doesn't get the opportunity to get out for a run.

I couldn't imagine what Max would be like if we were unable to give him proper walks all the time! He'd be a nightmare dog and just destroy the house :/

the dog whisperer believes in the method exercise, food, disclipline, affection in that order for a calm dog. i can see how it works.

dogs in the wild walk miles each day to find food... we hand it to them ina bowl

I think he has something very good there.

Sometimes when the weather has been to bad to go for a really long walk we just kick a football around in the garden with her to run after and hide food for her to "hunt" out **things like pigs ears behind the kennel lol **
