I know they are only doing there job but ARGHHHHH

If there is more then one person present when buying alcohol you are supposed to ID everyone incase they are buying it for them.

Ive had to turn people away as not everyone had ID. ive been called rude, a bitch, power mad, crazy, stupid, blind and even been threatened because i wouldnt serve someone.

We are not allowed to sell a age restricted item if someone says "oh ill buy it instead then" as clearly their just doing it because you have refused the other person.

My life would be easier not to be strict about ID'ing i wouldnt have to put up with all the silly aggression over booze but its the rules and i have to follow them.

This rule is the most ridiculous rule i've heard ever!!
My OH is 28 and was ID'd for cigs and he showed them his licence and then they asked me when i was like fully pregnant and i was like 'Yeah cos of course there for me you complete utter moron!'

And then whilst with my dad i got ID'd and my dad left and went else where.
It's a ridiculous rule it seriously is,round my area we get it quite a bit and so many stories in the paper and there thinking of getting rid of the rule here because it's insane!

Saying that i never get ID'd anymore even though i'm underage:dohh: i go into shops and buy OH cigs and beer even without little one and no one gives a damn LOL!

p.s: but i agree you shouldn't of been threatended...but seriously there are some twats out there that do it to piss you off so i have become gobby before cos it winds ,me up!

pregnant people do buy cigerates though thats why he ID'd you.

Ive worked in alot of shops and have never me anyone who ID's just to piss people off. we do it because it is our job.

I dont understand why people get so annoyed, its not my fault you dont have ID is it??? and its only booze or cigerattes not exactly the end of the world if you cant have it there and now!

It is annoying. I rarely buy booze and I don't smoke but supermarkets usually ask for ID. There are some fundamental problems with rules.
1) if you're supposed to ID everyone in a group then clearly parents who shop with their children are being discriminated against.
2) the rules about looking under 21 or 25 or however old give the wrong impression that the legal age isn't actually 18.
3) most importantly if we are to have a culture if requesting ID for everything then we have to get the ID cards everyone was so furious about. Not everyone drives, not everyone goes abroad. We should people who are not breaking the law but don't possess ID be discriminated against?

Edit: Just noticed I typed don't drink when I meant don't smoke.

1. obviously you use your common sense, if they are with a 12 year old then you wouldn't ID the 12 year old (although i have had to refuse people because i have seen their teenage son/daughter picking out the booze handing it to the parents and saying thank you)

2. The point in that is alot of 17 year olds dont look 17 they can look much older. think 21 or 25 (it was 30 in my store) works which is why people use 'it. I have IDd people just to be cautious even though i was 90% sure they were at least 21 and it turns out they are only just 18!

3. you can actually get a citizen card which is like £5 or free which works so you don't need a drivers licence or passport although alot of other things require those so i don't really understand the issue.

Also you need ID to get married, open a bank account, hire something, claim benefits so its not as though you only need ID to buy alchol. having ID is a part of life.

The police send in under-age kids to buy booze to test shops and they purposely pick the ones who look older. Thats why some cashiers are really cautious. I know i am. Its not worth me losing £80/my job/or be prosecuted just because you dont have ID on you. Your booze is not that important to me im afraid

I dont mind if the cashier person asks nicely, i'll happily oblige, afterall manners dont cost a thing, but its little jumped up jobsworths that drive me insane

"you got ID?"

OFC thats going to get peoples backs up, ID aside, its just plain rude IMO

I perfectly understand the reasoning behind the rules. It doesn't alter the fact that innocent people get penalised. If ID is going to be a common part of our culture like in the US then we should have a national ID scheme. I have no beef with that but just about everyone else in the UK did. I opened my bank a count when I was 16 so clearly had no form of ID to do so. Most things accept a collection of things such as letters from utility suppliers with your address on which obviously would be ridiculous things to carry around. By all means ask for ID, it'd make things much simpler though if we just had cards as standard.

For me, it's definitely all about attitude. If I'm Id'd and don't have ID with me I just get on with it. I used to work in a pub and know that it's not worth serving someone and losing your job over it so I totally understand.
I am never Id'd when with my mum, dh or my kids so I think for the most part people do use common sense. A small minority are extremely rude.
My dh made a cashier look VERY small due to her attitude when Id'ing us a few years ago. She referred to me as HER/SHE and implied that she only ID'd us because I was there and CLEARLY underage. I took out my passport which showed I was 27. My dh is a sarecastic git and went to town because of her crappy attitude.

Wow....I got ID'd the other day at 34 years old and I would NEVER be upset about that! That's a compliment....how on earth could someone wind me up by saying you look younger than you are???? lol! Here most people carry their wallets with them and almost everyone has a driver's license so ID is never a problem.

i would never walk around without an ID just because if you end up in an accident or can't speak for yourself how will anyone be able to prove who you are?

a touch of paranoia, but i wouldn't want to be stuck without a way of proving my identity.

I also want to add that I don't really think it should down to cashiers. In a supermarket it's almost always a 16-18 year old asking and I don't see that they should be expected to judge ages they've never lived and may well not even know anyone that age. Like I said in my first post it doesn't affect me as I rarely drink in or out and now I have a photocard for my driving licence that of course I keep in my wallet. I found it flattering when I was 24 but now I'm in my 30s it's just naive.

It wasn't like this when I worked in a bar, I don't think I ever ID'd anyone. We had bouncers always so they supposedly checked ID on entry.

Sorry but they dont use the ones who look older. I volenterd to do this but got turned down because i looked older. The police woman admited she wouldent think to question some one who served me. Its still the same as my sister and cousin both volentered but my cousin got turned down because she looked older.

In my area they do send people in who look older and also tesco sends in people who are old enough but look younger to catch people out.

Also 16 and 17 year old cant cant authorise age restricted items, they have to have someone older to check.

They also send the older looking ones in here too.

A girl I used to work with got sacked because she served one of these girls (under police instruction) alcohol and even the manager said she would not have ID'd her :dohh: x

I always carry photo ID. I always get ID'd and I am 23. It just saves any hassle to carry it. x

The point is it wasn't for me so no it's not your fault but a 16 yr old who doesn't even want the bloody fags does not bring ID out with them :dohh:

Well it is a twat if you don't have no other shops near you open and they wont serve my OH just because he's with me and i have no ID
Bloody pathetic in my eyes..

Whether or not you think it is pathetic it is the LAW and it is what is going on under everyone's noses!

I know a guy who lives in the village I used to live in who used to go and buy alcohol for the kids in the area.

When you work in a supermarket if you ask one person for ID they have to show it. If they don't it does not matter who they are with they are not ALLOWED to serve you. This will be why they asked for ID. If one person in the 'party' looks underage you need to ask them if they don't have any no booze ... end of. Its the LAW

my mate got id'd for ciggies on his 30th birthday!!

i get id'd all the time now but when i was 15/16 buying ciggies and going into pubs i never got id'd/ im 25 now!

I'm not going to get into this argument because it contradicts itself completely.
Seeing as if this is the LAW half the time i've been with my dad or friends and NEVER been asked ID whilst buying.
When my OH has been with my cousin who is 14,he IS underage why is he not asked ID.
It contradicts itself which is why in my area they are trying to get rid of it from all the complaints.
Some people agree some don't
I PERSONALLY DON'T!

The law does not contradict itself ... it is the people implying it.

The people who are NOT asking for ID should be as it is the LAW too and also their job  If they were to be found serving alcohol to someone under 18 they could be fined from their employers as well as facing up to £5000 fine from the law.

If people did their jobs properly and ID'd the people they are supposed to then the law would not need to be complained about would it?

End of I am not getting into an argument seeing as people have different opinions..so that's it it wont change my mind.

:flower: plus i don't want to argue because it isn't me so no hard feelings yeah?
