is/was your LO a really bad sleeper? support and advise thread!

Hi everyone!

I've not posted for a few days as I've not really had much to report, just the same mixture of bad nights followed by a few good nights.

Lulu - congratulations on the pregnancy! It would have to be the immaculate conception for us too. We haven't DTD since I was pregnant and LO was a week overdue and we were trying everything to get her to come!

sorry to change the subjects, but can I ask ladies - when your LOs wake up say every hour, do they moan? whinge? cry? Mine cries and recently he seems to be in pain/discomfort, I'm starting to think there's something wrong with his tummy. :nope:

When LO wakes up she starts shuffling around looking for boob. If I don't latch her on sometimes she'll just wriggle a bit and go back to sleep. Mostly though she'll start to wake up more and moan a bit. If I don't latch her on then she'll wake completely and be awake for 90mins. It's a bit of a balancing act between trying to let her to self settle and not allowing her to wake up completely. If she's in her cot and wakes up early from a nap then she cries. If she's had enough sleep then she'll just call out to let me know that she's awake.

You could be right about LO being in discomfort though. I tend to think that if LO is waking every hour then there must be a reason for it even if I don't know what it is. I don't think it's habit because it's not every night and she goes through phases of waking hourly and then goes back to sleeping a bit better. That's one of the reasons why I'm reluctant to let her CIO because what if there is a reason for her waking that I just haven't figured out. She's not gaining much weight at the moment so if she wakes hourly all night wanting to feed I let her feed as I don't want to restrict her calorie intake at all. Saying that, maybe if I didn't allow her to eat so much at night she'd eat her solids better during the day.

How well does everyones LOs eat solids? My LO eats very little and I sometimes wonder if it's linked to her poor sleeping at night.

Lily eats very little, in fact I posted about it in the weaning section the other day. Some days she'll eat a fair bit, but even then it's not that much. She'll rarely eat anything for breakfast, lunch is very hit and miss, dinner is usually the most successful. She'll normally end up shouting and screaming at as we're trying to eat as quickly as we can, not had a relaxing meal in months.

We've done blw with her, she so far hasn't got what eating is about. We wouldn't of been able to have spoon fed her purée, as she hates it when we do try and offer her food.

My LO has always been a good eater, except for when he's teething and won't open his mouth for love nor money.

We do a mixture of TW and BLW...he's mainly having finger foods and portions of our meals atm as he's lost all interest in baby food, which is fine by me as it's easier really. He also drinks A LOT of milk (we're combi-feeding now), many BFs and several bottles (in fact he drank 12oz plus a bf before bed the other night!). He's always been a big baby and now that he's much more mobile he seems to be wanting more calories.

For some LOs it probably does make a difference, but for mine his sleep and eating habits have never been linked...it's all random with him

My LO's eating habits were totally linked to his sleep. Before we did CC he barely drank anything. He could go 8hrs in the day without a feed. I ended up giving up BF at 6 months as it was too stressful not to know how much he was or wasn't eating. We did TW and he took to solids very well but i knew how important it was for him to still have milk. When his sleep was bad I'd feed him every wake pretty much. The very first night we did CC he didn't wake for a feed and hasn't done since. The most noticeable difference is that he now takes 4 x 5/6 oz bottles a day.

A late post from me to report a very good start to the night ... Not even a wimped after I out her down, she just watched her seahorse and went straight to sleep!

Will be interesting to see if she is up a lot tonight but so far all quiet since 7pm!

Bit delayed in posting this evening as just found out I'm pregnant!! I think I'm mad!!

Wow! Congratulations!

Sometimes mine wake groaning and it escalates because they want me to come get them and usually only a boob will comfort them.
Sometimes they wake up right crying and I don't know why. I imagined scary dreams?

Cormac would always cry instantly, no moaning or groaning or gurgling. I now know he wasn't in pain but he just didn't want to be awake as it was his tired cry. Now when he wakes he just coos and gurgles and only cries after about 20 minutes if I haven't been to get him which oonly happens first thing in the morning as I lay there listening to him play with his sheep.
I started this reply this morning and only now have time to finish it and post it! :dohh:

What makes you think there is something wrong with his tummy?

During the nights he wakes up 100s of times, he wakes up crying/screaming and can only calm down after passing gas! Last night at 3:30am he just could not settle at all, he didn't want to be rocked or nursed, but as soon as I'd put him down he wriggled and cried as if in pain. I had my hand on his tummy and I could feel it gurgling lots. Plus, it's not 1 or 2 little farts, is constant farting! :winkwink::dohh: And they stink!
A few nights ago (after that really bad night that got me thinking that maybe there was some food intolerance or something) we both had a very mild dinner and his tummy seemed much better and he didn't fart either :winkwink: That night he went to bed at 8pm, and then woke up at 11pm, 2am, 4:30, 6:30 and then at 7:30am for the day. I know this may look like still quite a number of times, but I have the feeling that is/should be the pattern of a 'normal' night for my LO, if that makes any sense. Everyone of those times (maybe except the one at 6:30am) he was rather hungry, fed for a good 15min and then went back to sleep fine. Whenever he's ill or after shots, that's how he sleeps (ie 3 hr stretches) and that was also his pattern before the lovely 4th sleep regression.

what do you think ladies?

just seen more replies, thanks

Kosh - my LO used to cry instantly every time he woke, but like Flippity I now see that it was because he was tired and didn't want to be awake but couldn't get back to sleep. I used to rush in right away and make it worse I think.

If your LO is very gassy and seems to be in discomfort it could be a tummy issue. Have you tried anything like infacol etc? What have you decided about trying an exclusion diet for a while?

we give him infacol but only just before his night feed. (don't know why we stopped using it more often?! :dohh:)
I'm not eating any diary which seemed to have a really good effect the first night, but then the next one was again the same?

exactly the same here!

I agree re. there must be a reason for hourly wakes.
Also re. the frequent feedings at night, I remember you posted a while ago re. possible supply issues and I mentioned that mine seems to be very 'sensitive' to change. Maybe our LOs are actually keeping our supply up?
I talked to my LC the other day and she seemed to think my LO has swapped day and night feeding-wise, and suggested not to stop (or try to!) the night feedings as my supply might go down.
(I think why bird also has an issue with frequent proper feedings at night?)

that was my next question too!
we're doing BLW and although he eats quite a bit it's not a huge amount

anyone else doing BLW - do you see undigested food in their nappies?

need to go now, I think i still have a few to reply

Congrats Lulu.... How very exciting!!

I have just returned from a long weekend at the in laws and LO sleeping has been awful, he has been waking up half hourly until about 10ish when he will do 2, 2 hourly stretches followed by hourly wakes and then up for day at 6.30am.
His routine went to pot as it always seems to do when we are away from home not sure if that made it worse as there is never any real 0pattern.

My LO eats three meals a day however its not massive amounts. He is BF and feeds every four hours during the day and almost every time he wakes at night although it is often only a comfort suck.

Hope everyone has a good night with their Lo's.

Hi ladies! Hope everyone has had good weekends :flower:

lulu - massive congrats on the pregnancy! :hugs:

We've had another couple of poor nights here. LO STILL has a cold and cough so the sleep is pretty disturbed unfortunately. I could happily go to bed right now if I had the chance! haven't had a chance to read through all the posts from the last couple of days so will try to do that later...in the meantime hopefully everyone will have lovely easy bedtimes and settled nights :winkwink:

Our routine is in the pot already! Boys wouldn't nap for more than 30 - 45 mins after their 3pm bottle and when 5:45 - 6 came round they started crying with tiredness. It took me till 6:15 to send them off to sleep however and now at 6:45 I know that Dom will be up in 15 to 30 mins wanting to be up and doing. Sigh. So who knows when he will go to bed.

:hugs: :hugs: Our bedtime is currently going really badly too. DH is trying to settle him as he just. will. not. lie down when I'm in the room. Looks like my few blissful nights of LO self settling were just a fluke and we're back to square one.

90 mins into our evening battle, she dozed for 45 mins and is now refusing to go back off, she's so bloody exhausted as well.

I really hope the osteopath helps, but I suspect it won't as I feel there is so much riding on it.

:hugs: to all those having stressful bedtimes. I will cross all my fingers and toes that all this evening activity leads to tired babies who sleep well tonight (never hurts to hope, right?!) :flower:

Do you know, I am on the whole not superstitious but when it comes to Dom I always think mentioning anything good about his sleeping will jinx things. So I will not say anything but I am touching wood and crossing my fingers for the rest of the night :haha:

Ah, I so know what you mean. Good luck for tonight.

Lily is still fighting.......

If I ever had a good night I would never ever tell anyone. I was so convinced it would hint things (never actually made difference!) Even now I don't like to talk about it. You can also guarantee that if myself or OH comments on a long nap he will wake up 30 seconds later. He KNOWS.
