living with kids with allergies group

Kelly- that's really great you have been bum free for a month now. Hope the trial goes well and you figure out exactly what the problem is.

Buttonnose- good idea about the cake and biscuits. They are ridiculously expensive!

Button, dont be fooled by "free from" foods...for example we stumbled upon Asda smart price jam tarts being free of milk and soya! Why pay over the odds when smart price is so cheap!

His appointment didnt go very well, he's eating abit better than before and hes still on high calorie drinks but hes still not gaining weight. Were back next month to see consultant and a feeding therapist and then back at diatician beginning of january. Also staying on the steriods for now as there helping his bowels alot.

Cant remember who mentioned shellfish but my LO is alright with white fish but allergic to shellfish

jemma sorry his appointment didn't go well :hugs:

AG our neighbour said that, her little one has the same issues as little man but he also can't have egg, she said alot of the smart price stuff is ok, she said the smart price onion rings as fine so might try him on those as he is getting fed up of organix carrot sticks

For those of you whose kids are anaphylactic where do you keep your epipens. I keep it in the diaper bag, but I am sure its getting exposed to sun a lot. Now that its winter its not such a problem but I don't know maybe someone has a better place?

The onion rings I didnt know about, weve been buying the big movie bags! Ive said before but dont feel like youre pestering me to text and ask about foods!

Theyre not asda brand, might even be store specific but my shop did a movie event thing one time with the big sharing bags and then moved them to the crisps aisle

The paediatrician is on us about Skyler's weight to he's 15 months and 22 pounds and it makes me mad that they focus so much on that and not the bowel issues we've been having (especially since myself and his dad are smaller people) then they go an give us all these recipes for high calorie smoothies and milkshakes which all need dairy or cream... um hello we told you already he's lactose free! We've had much more success with the GI specialists at the children's hospital.

The GI doc is also testing his DNA for the genes/markers for Celiac (a test I didn't even know existed!) The doc said a specialist is the only one who can order it out here as it's very specialized, we don't have results yet but I am hoping to get them back by our next appt which is end of dec though for the life of me I can't remember when lol. Will have to call.

15 months 22 pounds is not bad right? Katerina is 18 months and 22.7 pounds and I think she is on the 50th centile.

We also had a lot more luck with the GI specialist I have to say. Hope you get some answers with those tests. Isn't celiac when they are allergic to gluten?

That's exactly what celiac is. Boys are expected to be heavier so he's on the 12th percentile or something but he's also a tall little boy. If I weight him fully clothed just after a meal with diaper on I can get him to 23 pounds on our scale lol! I think the challenge is they just don't gain weight as fast once they hit a year of age so at 18 months he'll likely be only a few ounces heavier or with our luck he'll lose weight. I'm workin hard to get him a little chubbier.

goodness know what they would say about little man then, he is on the 9th percentile, he is 19lb 8 at 14 months!

I used to use a cool bag, within my nappy bag like you would put packed lunch or picnic stuff in. My eldest carrys it himself while at school in his lunch box now however (I dnt trust the school) x

My cousin is cealiac so thats was the first thing they tested LO for but for him its wheat hes allergic to not gluten

My husband has it mildly as does his aunt and mother so it's likely Skyler could have it but normally it doesn't present in kids this young, they did a blood test for Celiac on him and it was negative but the blood test on kids is not very reliable so hopefully the DNA test will tell us one way or the other. Skyler doesn't seem to have any issues with wheat or gluten he's been getting it for ages and has no other symptoms just the diarrhea.

My cousin was diagnosed at 17 months by blood test and endoscopy. I probably sound stupid but how does the DNA test work as over here ive never heard of it and your diagnosed by blood test and endoscopy

The DNA test checks your DNA or genes for specific markers related to celiac. I had never heard of it as well till we went to the specialist and when I asked she said it's expensive and only the specialists can offer it. Out here they use blood test and endoscopy as well but apparently the blood test isn't as reliable on younger kids and I don't want to go the endoscopy route just yet cause Skyler is so young. I will if needed but if this DNA test can rule it out altogether then he'll never need to undergo that. Does that help? I don't know much about it either.

I think you are so right in trying to get to the bottom of it without the endoscopy. It is not fun!!!

I agree, LOs had 2 endoscopy/colonoscopy in the space of 6 months and each time was heartbreaking. Its awful to go through. Hows katrina doing happyface?

She is doing much better actually! BUT on a very very strict diet which means she is now bored of anything she is eating. I cut out a few things about a month ago as she was not well on and off and I wasn't sure what it was. Will start re-introducing a few things this week and will attempt to make my own yogurt again as last time I failed! :dohh: She is still on antihistamines though. We were told that we can try cutting them out, doctor is not sure about it but said to try it anyway. Will do now she is better!
