living with kids with allergies group

Thats great news, when are you next back at the hospital? Were every 3 weeks at the minute with his weight being bad and him being on steriods. On a positive note he ate brilliantly today for him anyway. He had 2 proper meals which for anyone who knows us and spoke to us alot will know how much of an achievment that is. I just hope it lasts:)

This is great news!! Hopefully he will keep that up!!

We are not in again till the summer. No need for it as she has recovered so now its just a waiting game. We were told not to challenge her until the spring anyway.

Well I gave her chicken today. Trying to re-introduce some foods I cut off a month ago that I suspected! She is full of gas, bloated tummy and not sleeping well. I mean. . . Chicken???

I get so excited when Skyler eats a good meal especially when its our food and not baby food! It's been a hard struggle but we've managed to get our son to gain 3 pounds in the last 6-7 months. After loosing over 10% of his weight in a matter of two weeks.

Thats great news Jemma :hugs: feels great when theyve eaten a good meal!

We will be back in Feb to get Alexs tests redone, blood and skin prick ones to see how they come out.

Well he decided not to eat again today, im used to it now though. He had a couple of snacky bits but no proper meals:(

Hi girls. Hope its ok to join? James has a lactose intolerance, and is allergic to fresh pineapple, and query wheat. He was breastfed for 12 days before my milk dried up and the problems started from then really. He went onto Aptamil and from pretty much day 1 he would projectile vomit every feed, had acidy smelling green poops, and would scream 24/7. He was being weighed weekly cos of this and wasn't gaining...went down to just below the 9th centile. Kept taking him to the GP and HV and saying something was wrong, to be told its just colic. Told them about his half brother having lactose intolerance, and his cousin also having lactose intolerance, and was ignored. Finally when he was 8 weeks old I couldn't take it any longer and with go ahead from the HV put him on SMA LF....within 3 days he was taking 5oz at a time, keeping it down, sleeping for 3 hours between feeds and not screaming! He had normal wholegrain mustard poops and life was much happier. He was weaned onto lactose free foods which was all fine. Gained weight well and was on 50th centile. On the HV's advice I slowly introduced dairy foods a little at a time and he was doing really well eating yoghurt, cheese etc but still wasn't toleraing cow's milk or ordinary formula. By the age of 20 months he was weaned onto SMA Toddler and was tolerating this fine! So thought we were over the worst. Unfortunately in October he then got gastroenteritis....which caused him to end up in hospital on a drip after 12 days of diarrhoea and vomiting. Since then he has gone back to square one and is back on his LF formula, and avoiding dairy because he can't tolerate it. He can cope with like 1 petis filous a day max and thats it. He has now also developed eczema over the last couple of weeks which is awful, his whole torso is covered and its now spreading to his bum and behind his right knee.

He has also developed an allergy to fresh pineapple (I am also badly allergic) but is fine with the tinned stuff. And they are querying a wheat intolerance (yet again I have a wheat intolerance) because he isn't gaining weight very well again and has periods of loose stools for weeks on end with no obvious cause.

I would very much like some advice and support :)

:hi: welcome, your in the right place. All the girls in this thread are great and will help wherever we can.

My LO has a cows milk protein allergy, soya allergy, wheat allergy and shellfish allergy. Life is hard having to avoid so many things and wheat is terrible to avoid but were doing ok.

We were first fobbed off with the colic excuse and it took us 4 months to get a cmpa diagnosis, he was diagnosed with a soya allergy at a year, diagnosed at 22 months with a wheat allergy and shellfish at 25 months.

Alot of us have found that viruses and infections have made things worse if there has been an improvement but it does get better.

For me having LO with so many allergies was a shock as theres no history of allergies in either family so it was a big learning curve.
How have you been doing?

:hi: Littlekitten welcome to the thread :)
Support and help is certainly what you will get here! If you need advice or to jsut rant then type away, were all here for each other :hugs:

Thanks guys. Its so nice to actually be able to chat to people who get where im coming from! Its such a PITA having to explain things to people lol.

Hi Littlekitten!

I'm so sorry you are having such a difficult time! Katerina is allergic to dairy, soya, egg, white fish, wheat and there is lots we haven't tried still! It gets realky difficult at times but this forum is great for support and advice!

Hi happyface. Yeah it is difficult....especially when the drs don't listen to you and just say 'oh we will keep an eye on his weight and unless it drifts we won't worry'.....excuse me but the constant tummy bugs and loose nappies and eczema....all tell me he is allergic to something else!!

It is true, they are only concerned if a baby/toddler is losing too much weight. I never got that to be honest! Katerina never lost too much weight but has suffered so much. We spend more than 6 months that she was waking ip every half hour. She never got a proper rest. Plus the exzema and diarrhea. You just have to keep pushing. :hugs:

Is a wheat allergy different to celiac?

Welcome littlekitten I newish on this thread to. My guy has a lactose intolerance as well and hearing the beginning of your story gives me hope that he'll eat cheese and yoghurt again one day. Skyler, was not as bad as you LO though, he only got the loose acidic foul smelling poops that would cause epic never ending bum rash. He was bf'd till 10 months then on cow milk till about 14 months before someone told me to give him LF formula, he's also on a low sugar diet to rule out a sensitivity to sugar and so far we've been bum rash free for 6 weeks with only the odd acidic poop. I think in a week or twos time they're going to try reintroducing lactose to see if they can rule it down to either lactose or sugar but I strongly suspect lactose is the culprit. He's also being tested for Celiac via a DNA test we're waiting on the results, cause Celiac runs in my husbands family.

I got the most support and information from the GI specialists at the childrens hospital out here the Ped was useless.

As far as I know it is different. I think celiac is gluten basically right?

Yes it is gluten but also wheat but maybe thats cause there is gluten in wheat?

Yeah, I don't know if a wheat allergy would be harder food wise or gluten in terms of restrictions? my hubby couldn't have anything with wheat or wheat starch nor could he have pasta unless it was rice pasta and they put a ton of "gluten" in random things like sauces and mixes and such so we had to be careful and read the ingredients list.

Kelly9 - Gluten free is way more restrictive!! x

All the good wheat substitutes contain gluten. To make good GF baking you usually need a mix of 3 or 4 different flours like rice, chickpea, quinoa, etc. Many people who are WF can still eat the ancient grains like spelt and kamut, which are pretty interchangeable in baking.
