I've used so many pumps...Gerber manual, First Years Double Electric, two Avent Isis manuals and the Avent Isis IQ Duo Double Electric. Gerber manual sucked and hubby broke it by washing the spring handle, First Years hurt like hell and did bad nipple damage, hubby washed the old valves of the Avent manual pumps down the sink, and the Avent Isis IQ Duo has been my lifesaver. I love it. For as much as I produce, this pump drains me in 20-30 minutes. It's comfortable, effective and has a memory. Where most pumps have predetermined speeds, you control the speed of this one by starting off manually, then push a button and it continues pumping electronically at the speed you were going manually. It retails here for $500 but I got mine, brand new and sealed off Ebay for $249.
The best part about being able to control the speed is that I can easily pump through my cracked nipples by starting off gently and slowly until my nipples adapt to the suction, and then apply more pressure, whereas most pumps automatically start off with a determined level of pressure. The predetermined level would just crack my nipples open again and make them bleed, where being able to start gently prevents them from recracking and bleeding.
I've used a Medela before and personally, it wasn't for me, but that's awesome that your hubby has promised you one. I hope it works for you! If it doesn't, I highly recommend the IQ Duo.
On another note, after a week of no bleeding, I had a big gush and stained my white couch. It went right through the pad. Grrrr.
