*Please Read* Obstetric Cholestasis

so i have been having tablets to calm my obstetric cholestasis and im so much better so will they definatly induce or deliver the baby earlier im 35 weeks but nothings been mentioned?? x

I'm glad I found this, a helpful lady mentioned it was here! I said that I was due results Monday but having thiught about it it was actually last Monday and they haven't phoned me! She said she would whether I had it or not.. anyways the itching has got so bad the last few days I have broken the skin on the too of my foot and the bottom half of my leg its so bad. My palms have been awful too, the itchy places feel sore and hot but not swollen. I've just started getting itchy on my arms too and dark urine :(

Does this sound like I could have it? I'm ringing to get checked again and tell them off as they assured me I couldn't possible have it as i have no gall bladder! Which is untrue apparently I can x

I am so angry.

In my previous pregnancy I had obstetric cholestasis and they delivered my DS at 36 weeks.

Since Monday night I have been itching all over. I went to the hospital yesterday and they did blood tests and confirmed yes you have it again. I am already booked in for a csection on 16th Dec but they told me because I had the liver disorder again they will need to do a new plan of action and bring the section date forward. Whilst there they made me an appt to see the consultant today to make the new arrangements.

However, I get to the hospital to be told, actually we got it wrong you dont have it. It is scaled 1-55 and you are 55, if you were 56 yes you would have it, we know you are itching which is a sign of if but you dont have it, so see you on the 16th for when your section is booked.

Er hello, previous history, 55 yesterday, only just started itching, could be 65 today but dont worry I will continue itching for two weeks meanwhile there is the risks of the disorder ie stillbirth and also bleeding for me. Thanks a bunch NHS!!

Just wondered if anyone could shed any light for me.
I had suspected OC as I has itching like MAD!!
My ALTs came back high at 56 but my bile came back at 3 so I've been told I don't have OC (which I'm very glad about) BUT I'm still itching like crazy and I'm actually bleeding from so much scratching.
Anyone know what it could be?

I'd ask them to repeat the blood tests hun as the blood tests don't always show up the OC straight away. I believe it can take a couple of weeks to show up. I was tested every two weeks all the way through my pregnancy after having it in my first pregnancy and this time, even though I'd been itchy, I wasn't diagnosed until 39 weeks and then was induced straight away.

Hi i am new here too, i have OC i am 36 weeks and getting induced next thursday, its awful i feel so ill, up all night scratching and feeling so sick,i had this condition with my daughter 10 years ago, please mention it to your midwife, i will be so glad to deliver my baby just to know he/she is safe, they tried to leave me till 38 weeks but i told them no i am not taking the risk. Good luck xx

Arrrggghhhhhh, I am itching so bad! This is driving me crazy! I can't even sleep because of it. I am up all night long, till day time. I wonder if I have O.C , but the thing is that I don't itch every single day, just sometimes. Im goign to metnion this to my Dr. the next time I go in, do all doctors know about this?

I had it with my son 8 years ago....didnt show up on the bloods until i was 38 weeks. I had to insist they do blood tests every week as i knew this was the condition i had after researching it on the net. Anyhow, went into labour naturally at 39 weeks.

Well, today i have got the itching again in this pregnancy, s far its on m hands only. Aaagggghhh, ill go mad. D you know if theres any medicine available for it now?

I just had my test for obstetrics done yesterday, I wll find out next week if I have it or not. If i do, the doc. said they will induce me. But the thing is, how often do u itch with o.c? Is it an evryday thing or just once in a while? Because mine is not evryday.

Bambi, I've just been diagnosed with O.C. Not only do I itch every day, everywhere on my body, but its almost 24/7 and unbearable.

I'm so worried about this. I'm being left until 38 weeks for induction, but I think I'm a week ahead with my dates, so actually I think I'll be 39 weeks.

How can I get them to listen to me and induce me earlier? xxx

Diagnosed again with OC :(.
They will give me a date for induction next week.
Really hope i go into labour naturally.....

Just to say I had oc in my pregnancy and although I did have itching it wasn't really tht bad wouldn't of evn mentioned it to mw but she asked n I said I had mild itching on inside of feet so she done blood test to be sure n turns out I did have it but whn blood tests came back I was already 1 day overdue so went in tht day to be induced but went into labour while waiting to be induced feel so lucky nothing happened as I no it gets riskier after 37 weeks, so evn if mild itching I would say get a blood test to be on the safe side.

so would the blood test done at 28 weeks pick up if i had OC? x

Hi i have really bad itching and been told i have obstetric cholestasis and been given medication but the problem is it is not helping at all, would the induce me even earlier because of the really bad itching,
im not sleeping at all and worried if i mention this to the midwife she will want to induce me even earlier

Hi,

I'm after some advice really, I have suspected OC due to excessive itching (including on palms/soles) and horridly dark urine. I am 38+5 today and hope to get the results from the blood tests I had today tomorrow, my question is what is the likely outcome if I do have it??

Thanks in advance, not really sure what to think at the moment

Moo xx

If you do have it it is very likely they'll book you in for an induction ASAP. In my first pregnancy I was diagnosed at 36 weeks and induced as soon as I reached 38 weeks. In my second pregnancy even though I had blood tests every 2 weeks the entire pregnancy it wasn't diagnosed until 39 weeks. I was diagnosed on the Wednesday and induced on the Friday of that week.

:hugs:

Hi, Thank you so much for this thread. I woke up at 4.30 this morning itching like mad. I also had some pv bleeding so I called my midwife, I had read this thread when I first came over to the 3rd tri and I just happened to mention it on top of the bleeding. They weren't going to have me in because of the bleed but as soon as I mentioned the itching they told me to come in and have bloods. It turns out that i have oc and have to have weekly blood tests until the birth.
If I hadn't read this thread i wouldn't have mentioned it!!
Thanks Again!!

Just a quick update - I did have OC and was induced on confirmation at 38+6. Had a difficult labour and ended up with a c-section under GA. Our yummy little girl was born safely at 39+1 - I did haemorrhage (an effect of OC apparently) quite badly and am quite aneamic now but am so glad I saw this thread as wouldn't have mentioned the itching to the MW otherwise and hate to think of the possible consequences.

I have really itchy palms and feet so im going to contact them about this. do u ladies think i should go through MW or GP?

Nothing showed up from bloods done at 28 weeks.... im 31 weeks now and have been itching for a week.

will they do a blood test to try to diagnose/dismiss OC? is that how it works?
