uhh... breastfeeding an 8 year old??

Oo better example. Like those 5 year olds you see on supernanny who are still spoon fed and get their bums wiped because their parents dont want them to grow up and not need them.

This reminds me of that which i think is a unhealthy attitude to have

My opinion on this is that to me it is verging on wrong. The natural weaning age is what 5/6 so at 8 surely it has to be forced to a certain extent.

Yes breast milk is great, made for humans but it is for babies. There is a age where a child does need to be more independent and breast feeding at 8 doesnt actually seem all that natural to me.

I do think that just because something is breast feeding it doesnt make it ok. Its normal and natural for babies t comfort suck....would it be ok and accepted for a 8 year old to have a dummy? no it wouldnt.

I really dont think it would be possible to force an 8 year old to Breastfeed  xx

I think that a big lack of encouragement to be dependant would be at play here.

When i say forced i mean more the mother fighting to BF by not encouraging independence i guess.

I kind of think of those mother/child relationships where the mother hasnt let go so they end up with a very dependant adult....kind of like that film pysco? (im not saying this kid is going to be a seriel killer its just the only example i can think of to show what i mean ish)

I'm not sure really, I'm not sure if independance/dependance is something we as parents have much control of, I dont know? Like Amy, even at 2, is now wanting to dress herself, eat her own Dinner etc. She lets me know where I'm not wanted  lol....but then again all of mine have been very independant by nature, I guess if they aren't like that, it may be easier for the mother to maintain the Breastfeeding for so long? x

The average parent encourages independence without even meaning to i think but to me breast feeding past the age where nature usually weans doesnt seem natural so for me it feels like some kind of manipulation (whether purposely or not) is coming from the parent.

I figure if nature weans kids at 5/6/when they loose their baby teeth then there is a reason for it and anything past that is pushing it

Its not possible to force a baby to breastfeed if they realy dont want to let alone an 8 year old.

why would/should babys drinking cows milk be the norm  It should be human milk because theyre human babys, not calfs.

Theres nothing wrong with cows milk but its odd to say that making BF (human milk) the norm would make cows milk not the norm.. of course its not the norm!

but this child isnt a baby hes 8.

Breast milk is and should be the norm for babies but when you are older other things in your diet replace it like cows milk.

If breast milk was supposed to be given indefinitely then there wouldn't be a natural weaning age and we would still be getting milk from our mothers now. It is normal to move into other forms of food intake

But who said we should give Cows milk to Humans? I was thinking about this earlier  - too much time on my hands lol...would you give your child Dog or Cat milk?

But is it abnormal now because it's abnormal... or because of agriculture? Humans were designed to consume nuts, leafy greens, some argue fatty meats, fruits, and that's basically it. Cow's milk is a modern invention.

Is it abnormal because it's not physically or developmentally correct - or abnormal because you can buy a clean jug of milk at the store?

i was referring to a post a few pages back, just didnt quote and it was referring to babies and BF in general, not just older children.

The natural human weaning age is actually 2.5 to 7 so 8 isnt really very far off that

I guess if they needed what was in cats/dogs milk and we couldnt get it anywhere else i would...cant imagine milking a cat though :haha:

theres loads of studies too that shows that more humans than not are some degree of lactose intolerant

Ollie is 7 on Tuesday, and he still has all of his milk teeth, so i guess his suckling reflex would still be there if I'd breastfed him that long (I didnt actually breastfeed him at all, something i bitterly regret) but if thats one of the theories about self weaning then i guess he'd still be going in another 6 months as Dentist said that'll be at least how long it is before he looses any x

:haha: lol...hats what i mean, years and years ago, people wouldnt have imagined milking a cow, but they did, and now its seen as the Norm. But if we are happy to give our children milk from an animals boob, then why not our own? Would you feel differently if you could go into a shop and buy bottled breastmilk for them- or would you still pick up cows milk? As I say, i personally wouldnt breatfeed for that long, but it doesnt offend me either, iykwim? x

Also, i think people forget that they dont just become 8 overnight IYKWIM. I thought BF a 2.5 year old would have been weird and they looked huge to me when Amelie was tiny but now, I still see her as small. Its not like you wake up one day and theyre no longer a baby.

 My friend is very much of the opinion that once a baby is 1 years old, you should stop. I'm not sure what she think happens on that 366'th day of life that makes it so wrong  I battled with her for months over it, she insisted that Amy was too old and that it was wrong and no benefit to her what so ever :dohh:

I would buy breast milk at a shop for my kids but wouldnt breast feed them directly at 8.

Odd thought....who the hell looked at a cow and thought "hey i bet their milk is tasty", i mean the first person to try it must have been a bit weird right?

Will be very odd BF a newborn

I remember seeing this poster on come dine with me (the guy was a vegan i think)

It does seem that its the actual feeding from the breast part that most people are uncomfortable with, rather than if it was, say expressed, but I still dont get why really. I do see that there has to be a line drawn somewhere, but at 8 i still think they are pretty innocent and dont understand that boobs may be seen as sexual.

Thats what i was thinking today! And why just cows? Surely there are other animals closer to us, like Monkeys...though I dont suppose you get many of those in Cumbria
