uhh... breastfeeding an 8 year old??

I guess cows are easy to grow (not that you grow cows but YKWIM lol) and milk.

I still dont see the feeding from the breast as sexual i just think its a un natural attachment to the mum

But is it abnormal now because it's abnormal... or because of agriculture? Humans were designed to consume nuts, leafy greens, some argue fatty meats, fruits, and that's basically it. Cow's milk is a modern invention.

Is it abnormal because it's not physically or developmentally correct - or abnormal because you can buy a clean jug of milk at the store?

Just looking on wikipedia and it says cows milk has been used since before christ so its pretty old

Modern invention in terms of how old the human race is in regards to eating other stuff but cows and goats milk have been consumed for more then a thousand years.
Goats milk was often given to babies where a mother or wet nurse wasnt available around 2500 years ago (granted mortality rate wasnt good back then) I was shocked to learn today that formula is around 300 years old, there was even a form of substitute about 500 years ago, I always thought it was a 50's invention.

I cant help but think people see things as wrong (many things iin life not just this) just because that is how we are now programmed to view it where as say 100 years ago we wouldnt have batted an eyelid at some of the things that seem odd to us now.
Whos to say there realy is a natural weaning age other then because we are told there is.

The same applys to a conversation I was having with OH the other day about young pregnant girls (im talking 13 sort of age rather then later teens) we only thinks its out of the norm these days because thats the way of modern thinking and how we are programmed to see it as either wrong or out of the norm yet years ago most girls would have been married at that age and it would have been seen as odd to not have been married, pregnant or at least betrothed.
It was commen place for royal family children to be breastfed by a wet nurse at 7/8 sort of age for the added nutriants about 200 years ago so it has to be modern attitude that now makes it wrong

Human milk contains, on average, 1.1% protein, 4.2% fat, 7.0% lactose (a sugar), and supplies 72 kcal of energy per 100 grams.
Cow milk contains, on average, 3.4% protein, 3.6% fat, and 4.6% lactose, 0.7% minerals [47] and supplies 66 kcal of energy per 100 grams.

So breast milk actually has more fat and calories or am i reading it wrong?

I would buy breast milk at a shop for my kids but wouldnt breast feed them directly at 8.

Odd thought....who the hell looked at a cow and thought "hey i bet their milk is tasty", i mean the first person to try it must have been a bit weird right?

Especial if the bull was there first choice to try :haha:

Yes it's old but in terms of the human race, 10,000 years or so of domestication is really not long at all.

Thats what i read it as too. Thats a good thing, right? And also also the added anti-bodies etc etc that are designed just perfectly for our babies  which cows milk definately isnt x

No thats right. Breastmilk is really fatty. if you refridgerate expressed milk and it seperates its like half fat. All good stuff :D

I remember seeing this poster on come dine with me (the guy was a vegan i think)

Made me laugh but does make you think?

Sorry dont want to get into this debate again but

Hummmm think it's odd and weird I would hate to remember sucking my mums boob

And another argument that I don't quite understand - is that some of you are saying she probably doesn't do it that often - just as a comfort thing or once a day. But are also stating that this is better than cows milk, etc. If she is really only getting one a day or a comfort suck, then surely she is getting some other form of milk also? Either that, or she is really nursing more than that. A lot of these arguments contradict each other.

Not really, no. I can only talk from my experience but Amy has never had cows milk or any other type of milk...up until 6 weeks ago, just one breastfeed in the morning.

I just know that my 3 year old drinks milk with each meal, and some inbetween. So to me it would seem as though they aren't getting the recommended amounts of calcium, etc, unless monitoring other foods closely to make sure they get what they need

Actually, I'd say that was a lot of milk  Besides, they can get calcium from other dairy products like cheese and yogurt as well as food like salmon, almonds, oatmeal, tofu etc

She gets the recommended amount she is supposed to have for her age. Not too much. And I said that other foods have it, it would just take closer monitoring to make sure they are getting enough.

Props to the mom for being able to breastfeed her daughter, but it's a bit too prolonged in my opinion. I wished I could have breastfed my daughter longer than I did, but it is just not for everyone. If I were still breastfeeding, I honestly couldn't see myself doing so until my daughter was 8 years old, but that's just me. This is a woman that I do not personally know, so therefore it is not in my place to judge her at all. As long as she & her children are both happy & healthy with this lifestyle choice, then so be it. Just let them continue on with their lives.

I havent read the entire thread but i dont agree with it .......

the whole why drink cows milk etc we eat animal meat dont we so why not the milk?
how much do we use milk in cooking to get cheese yogurt make sauces....i'm pretty sure if we stopped using cows milk and we had to use breast milk.....there wouldnt be enough to go round the whole population and there would also be plenty of pissed of women being used like cows!

years gone by ...The would eat everything they could from an animal, they didnt have a tesco to pop to.... they would not waste anything, even drinking the blood if need be (which still happens in secluded villages in Africa)
i dont see anything strange about drinking cows milk as surely then i would feel the same about eating the meat.

seeing an 8 year old being bf has the same reaction to me as seeing an 8 year old still being bottle fed, spoon fed or walking around in a nappy or with a dummy in their mouths. not right! jmo. x

I think that bolded bit is the appropriate summation of this whole debate. Whether or not it is "normal" will depend on the person's conditioning. In a society where breasts are viewed primarily for sex, and then secondarily for feeding an infant, it will follow that extended BFing seems abnormal, even though in actual fact it is the other way around.

My DH was saying to me he doesn't understand what the fascination is with breasts. Eg in some magazines they will go on about how lovely so and so's breasts look, but he doesn't get the sexual connection because he comes from a tribe where women walk topless. So alot of it is how your society behaves, and for me, that makes it very dangerous in so far as some people will just go with the flow, and not question or challenge their viewpoints (not directed at anyone on here, just in general).

You're totally missing the point in regards to the cows milk thing.

I do think there is this idea that just because something is BF that makes it ok when thats not the case.

ok i just watched the video again and the mother says how they talk to her breasts, touch them and dont like her wearing a bra. IMO that is not healthy for a 8 year old

for one this girl isnt far off puberty and having breasts herself.

to me it seems like a unhealthy dependancy. Also that girl seemed very immature for a 8 year old probably because she is being babied
