Breastfeeding Support - 6 months and beyond!

Hi, Ladies!

I didn't know this group exsited before. Mind if I join? :shy:

I have a DS, I call him Otter on here, that is almost 17 months and still nursing. He's been such a joy to BF. :cloud9: He's down to 1 feed at bedtime and I intend to hold on to that one for dear life!

I also have a DD that is almost 4 months, the munchkins are 13 months apart to the day. She's still EBF and will be until 6 months (minus the one time her brother shoved a spoonful of whipped cream in her mouth because he thought it was so yummy and wanted to share it. :dohh: )

DK (my DD) is my last kiddo, so I hope to enjoy the BFing bond into her toddler years as well.

Looking forward to chatting with you all! :flower:

DF, sounds like you are still struggling with sore nipples. :( I assume you know that Alex's latch is good? That is the biggest problem I had with DK, she can be such a distracted, lazy feeder! That caused my nipples to blister and bleed again for the first 2 week or so after she was born, despite Otter still feeding 3 times a day then.

I think William feeds more than that? And boo!! at William for cutting you. Ouchie!! I hope the damage isn't too bad and that you heal quickly. :hugs:

William will feed more at night than any time. And more so now since my milk has changed. I am actually in tears feeding. I dont know about poor latch but it takes a few attempts to get Alex on as he comes off a lot and gets annoyed, one of my nips is flat and hard to get up so takes a bit of messing about. He can get on the other one though. I want this pain to go away it reminds me of the start with william and it took me a long time to enjoy it then.

my HV said william should be on cows milk and I should stop being a martyr for breastfeeding. Nice. She is a nice woman but she just keeps coming out with stuff like ethat, i dont see why i cant give my milk to william ist better than cows milk and always will be! I dont think my son will be fooled by cows milk as a replacements for mine.

I managed to get out an ounze of milk tonight, was hard with manuel pump and took me half an hour and william had it down him in 5 seconds. So either i get a proper pump or dont do that again as its not worth it. In a sence that I cant get enough out and for all i got out it took him seconds to down.

I can never get anything out with a pump. Even with the hospital grade one. Those manual ones are horrible though. i hope your nip heals quickly for you. :hugs:

 Tigerlady!!!

Definitely get a better pump if you intend to pump very often.

Stupid HV. :dohh: A martyr for BFing?? What is that supposed to mean. :growlmad:

:hugs: DF, I don't know much about the flat nipple problem. :nope: I have struggled to turn DK into a better nurser for sure, though. I never had that problem with Otter. All I can say is that she got better as she got a little older. She continues to improve all the time. But it was hard going at first. I hope Alex gets better soon, and your nipples feel better.

Nimbus- if the other ladies at work chose to bf and express at work, you can most likely give yourself credit for paving the way! A co-worker of mine bf and expressed at work and she certainly inspired me to do the same  I also make jokes at work about bf and expressing too, LOL. I share an office with a male co-worker who I could sense was uncomfortable with me leaving our small office to pump. When I was gone people would come by looking for me and he never knew what to say. So instead of quietly leaving one day to pump I announced that it was time for me to head to the boob room, and we both laughed and now that weird tension is no longer there. Are you recovering well from your pnd? I'm glad you didn't have to stop nursing!

I seem to be having more good days recently so that's superb, and although i'm still home i'll be going back soon if all keeps improving! I feel blessed to be able to nurse my lil one and incredibly happy that they have told me to continue if i want. :happydance:

I'd like to think that i've shown some of the ladies that bf-ing and pumping at work is ok. We'll see and i'll report back... one of the ladies had a little girl early sat morning, so excitied for her!

I used to get lots of comments (I went back full time when La was 4.5 months and pumped until she was a year old - still feeding now but she quite happily goes without BM in the day unless I'm there.) Lots of 'are you STILL doing that? Blimey!' and 'doesn't she have any formula? Mine did when I went back' and once when I left a bowl with my sterile funnels etc in it on the table in the staffroom by mistake 'that's not very hygienic, is it? ' :growlmad: :nope:

BUT it was worth it and I did get some support and positive comments. I was doing it for my little girl anyway, not them.

Keep it up, you're doing so well!

In tears feeding now :( head sore as latching makes me cry. No amount of stupid linsinoh helps ! I am sick of this and swear its worse this time around. I am dizzy and have peripheral neuropathy in my face thats caused by stress and lack of sleep. Its not even Alex that keeps me awake its WIlliam now and the fact I cant just feed him at ease without clawing at the bed screaming in pain. Darren was even trying to calm me down and felt sorry for me. I am dreading feeding now. :( I want to get past this stage .

:hugs: DF i hope it passes soon. Are you letting the air get to your nipples? I found mine much less painful when i just kept my top off all day x

:hugs: :hugs: :hugs: :hugs: DF! I sure hope things get better soon! :(

Thanks Cleckner! :)

:hi: TigerLady! Welcome! :)

Sorry ladies I didn't even introduce myself yesterday :dohh:

I'm westbrja and I have a DD5 (Savannah), DS4 (Zayvion), and DD4mos (Brooklynn). I work full-time and go to school part-time. LO is exclusively bf'd and she has no plans to stop anytime soon (neither do I ). Does anyone mind if I join even though LO is only 4 months?

:hi: everyone, gosh it's been a while since I was here. We just passed our 14 months BFing milestone last week & harry's feeding about 6 or so times a day on average & now has 2oz of cow's milk a day in his doidy & now refuses to drink from anything else unless it's water :dohh: But he's getting there slowly; certainly not gonna be giving up his 'booby' anytime soon & replace it with cows milk- not fooled by it for a second, lol!

Dragonfly- i really hope your nips feel better soon. What kinda medela have you got? i dont pump anymore as harry wont drink it, but I have a medela swing that I could lend you if you want? obviously you'd need to sterilise it & such, or if it's just the power adapter cable you need, I dont mind you borrowing it if it'll help you?

Congrats on everyone's milestones & sprouting teeth :happydance:

Also, you ladies who pump @ work are amazing- no way could I do that! I love being able to use BFing as yet one more excuse why i shouldn't return to work yet, lol! :haha:

Anyways... have to go back & read lots of posts now :dohh: Hope everyone's well though. x

i have the mini electric. All i need is adapter for power . welcome westbrja !

DF, are you sure you don't have mastitis or thrush adding to the problem? The worst pain I ever felt -- had me also in tears and clawing at the sheets -- what thrush when I was pg. I had no signs of it other than the pain.

:hugs:

was checked for thrush , i know what that feels like to. mastitus i gave to watch for as i feel unwell again :( i cry when latching so i cant feed in front of anyone it would scare them.

Hi & welcome new ladies :flower:

Congrats on milestones too :happydance:

Kaiden still loves the boobie too. When I was moisturising after my shower this morning he climbed up on the bed next to me & next thing he had latched on :haha:

DF would it be worth trying nipple shields? I tried them when one of my nipples was at its sorest. Kaiden did take a couple of feeds using one which gave my sore nipple a little break. I was putting Lansinoh on before and after each feed and often in between too, although you are probably doing that already. The other thing I found helped was making sure I was holding him up enough. He would always latch on brilliantly so I couldn't understand why one nipple was so sore and one ok. I paid attention to what was happening on the good side and realised I wasn't supporting him enough on the sore side. Hope it gets better for you soon. :hugs:

I havce some nipple sheilds coming in mother care order with a latch assister. I used them with william but where useless but going to give them another go.

My guts are so not right these days! unless this is how you loose weight on bf ?? I never lost any last time/.

DF so off topic, but I saw your pics on flickr and the ones with you in in them, I did not think you looked like that!! I don't know what I was expecting but not what you actually look like!!!

I've always struggled to loose weight while BFing, never really have. :dohh:

I don't know what else might help, DF. I'm so sorry it hurts so bad. Surely a LC wouldn't mind seeing you feed, even it makes you cry. Maybe seeing you cry would motivate her to help you more. lol

:hugs: times 1000!! Breastfeeding when it is that painful is soooooo hard!!
