Family friendly dogs?

If we were to get a dog, we'd like a border terrier.
They are meant to be great with kids, but not so big that they'd need walking all day long?

Plus they look like little old men :haha:

Size is not always an indication of excersize. My MIL dog is constantly moving seriously, he does not stop jumping about and has to go out every day (he is border terrier) and needs to go offlead for a proper work out. My Staffie x boxer is quite content not being walked every day x

I have a little cocker spaniel and she is amazing. She loves us all and loves to be cuddled up on a lap. She puts up with lo climbing over her and is very watchful over him. She is fine on 2 short walks a day and fine on her own while we at school and work. Occasionally she goes without a walk and is fine on that. She really is the silliest most cuddly dog i have ever known...

I have a Rhodesian Ridgeback and he is fabulous with the children, my youngest treats him as his own personal pony! He is one of the most gentle dogs i've ever known around young children. That said he is very aggressive on the lead and towards other people out on walks but thats my fault for not socialising him enough as a puppy.

There are other ridgebacks in the area who sit quietly outside the local shops and don't bat an eyelid at anyone walking past.

Ridgebacks are great family dogs but really must be socialised from an early age regularly or they will become aggressive.

I have a Staffy.
Contry to popular belief, they are family dogs and mine is amazing with children.

xx

I was brought up with Samoyeds. They're probably the daftest soppiest dogs i've ever met. Very big and boysterous but total teddy bears. They need a lot of grooming and walking but they're fab for families who like the outdoors and who have a big garden.

This is me with Mishka my Dads boy. Ignore my face though, bad day and Mishy was giving me cuddles :haha:

That being said when we get a dog ourselves we'll prob get a jack russell. We have a maine coon cat so need a dog who's smaller/as small as he is.

As lots of others have said with the right training any dog can become a wonderful family pet, however certain breeds do come with personality traits so it's s good idea to look into breeds befor you make your decision. Have a think about your lifestyle and how you want a dog to fit in, think about how much time you can spend exercising your dog, think about grooming etc. It all takes up time!

We have two dogs, they are wire haired Hungarian vizslas and are lovely dogs. My parents have had retrievers and again they are amazing dogs but they shed a lot of hair and need far more grooming.

As long as you do your research and are prepared to devote time to training a puppy properly then you should have a lovely family pet. Be prepared for the first few months to be hard work though! I find puppies much harder work than babies!

Def agree with above... I had pup 2 months when lo came along and pup was def more work...!

yep puppies are much harder lol we always go for rescues 6mth plus nowadays x

Puppies are very hard work, take a lot of commitment.
