Breastfeeding Support - 6 months and beyond!

10 month BFing milestone here :happydance:

Canada seems very pro BFing compared to the US & UK. :) I'd love to move to Canada- it seems so lovely! My dream place would be Vancouver I reckon....

I feel like crap today... think I might be coming down with something- feel like i;m not functioning properly. Oh well... Mayeb I shoulod start drinking BM to boost my immune system, lol?

It can be very pro breastfeeding here and not at the same time. It's coming back now and being pushed a lot more than before which is great but I still get stares and weird/dirty/dusgusted looks in public :(

Hope you're feeling better :)

Yay William! :D

I wish Kayleigh would eat something lol... little bugger turns away and clamps her mouth shut so tight! I am just going to give up for now and get the iron drops!

have you thought about Baby led weaning? We've been doing it since 5 1/2 months and my los is great at it. She can decided what goes in her mouth and when etc. Makes a lot more sense to me than traditional weaning.
I'm not too sure how to do BLW. I am so scared she will choke, and I do not have CPR lol

Sophia is baby led weaning as well - I can't praise it enough and i haevn't found anything she won't eat yet - she is a gannet!

What do you give her? Again, I'm so scared of choking.... :(

Its highly unlikey choking actually happens. The gag reflex is soooo far forward at 6months (my lo's is actually in the centre of her tongue) so all er "choking" is actually gagging. She coughs and spits it up then picks it back up again and eats it! Get the BLW book by Gill Rapley if you can. I got one from the library. Explains everything well. I give my lo whatever we eat from pizza to roast dinner to curry to chinese etc etc. For example today she had toast with baked beans for breakie (most of the beans were mushed after her hands getting at them but she ate some), bread with thick soup for lunch - bread was mushed into the soup so she manage to eat it. And tonight we're having curry - so she'll have a pakora, naan bread with sauce, chunks of chicken and poppadoms.
The trick is to put some food on her tray and leave her be. If she grabs and eats it great - if not just let her play with it - and leave her a good 30/40mins to play with it. Shelby took about 2 weeks to start to actually eat something and very little actually gets consumed in the first place but at least they are teaching themselves how to eat. I'm soo enthusiatic about BLW I could write an essay on it!! Really really really do give it a good try and don't worry about choking. We did choking and cpr etc in baby classes so maybe ask your HV for some info on it if you are worried- Its really simply a case of a sharp pat on the back lol.

Wow!! Makes me want to give it a good go! I gave her a piece of celery this morning to help with her teeth too... she has none but her cheeks are so bright red today, poor girl. Maybe I will cook her up some things for lunch. Tonight we are having chili and rolls for supper but I don't think I would want to give her all the beans incase it bothers her tummy. How big should the pieces be, cooked/raw etc??
Canada is fantastic (not that I'm biased or anything! ) I don't particularly miss Montreal, where I grew up - but I do miss the Toronto area where my parents now live.

Canada is very pro-BF I think. To be truthful, I find it quite pro-BF here in Sunderland too though.

Canada Rocks! I love it here!

Canada is ace, we own a house there and will hopefully make a permanent move out there in the next 2 or 3 years :happydance: AnnaB, I used to date someone who lived in Creemore (an hour or so north of Toronto) do you know it?

I've been on holiday (it was rubbish - long story - the cottage we rented through a large UK tourism company was repossessed by bailiffs a couple of days in and we were evicted!!).

We're doing BLW (mostly), as Gill says, choking won't happen although I think it's a very common and valid concern. Esmé had falafel with mango chutney and tzatziki in flatbread for lunch today. She's eaten so many different things and we've yet to find something she doesn't like!

That sounds great!! I'm getting excited!! lol

You know what gets me, that concern advert on babies born starving, far as I know most formula is banned there by charities yet they still say they are born starving! wtf? breastfeeding promotion where? I have emailed concern to ask them about this.

My parents havnt visited me in a long time they just cant be arsed and nor could I. They wind me up and my lazy lay about bro pisses me off! my other half got him a job and all and he wouldnt do it prefers to live of my parents because he dosnt want to have to pay for the free roof and food he gets away with for years! My parents are happy paying for a 32 year old to live there who goes clubbing and never sleeps and give me crap when i ask for nappies when I am offering the money just cant get to a shop! I get so much different treatment and have decided to cut them out once and for all.

It's seriously sad.. pathetic too!

It's a shame about your parents... I don't get why people have to be like that :( It's never nice/fair when one sibling gets treated nice when the other is made to be like crap, when they are doing well... grrrr!

my lo has bits of food from pea sized to large tattie wedges size. to start with its best to use peices as wide as their mouths and long enough for their hand to grip the length plus about the same out of their hands. Cucumber is great for it as is toast soliders, apple slicess etc

Thanks!! :D She seems to like her celery, keeps dropping it but then finds it again and puts it in her mouth :) I have bananas and peaches here too. I also have this thing from NUBY it's a mesh net thing with a handle you can put some things in for them to eat so they get the taste but no chunks lol... she devours peaches in that haha

sounds perfect what she's doing with the celery. I'd be inclinded not to use the nuby mesh thing - it'll get her too used to there not being chunks and when she eats normal food she will choke as she wont be used to it. Letting them chock early on is best as the gag reflex is soo far forward they won't actually choke - it will just be them gagging. If you look in her mouth (without touching her) when she does gag you'll see the food is in the middle of the tongue lol - kinda like whya re you making all that fuss hahaa

See I never knew that :) Makes sense to me. So I have read you can give them egg yolks now, but not egg whites until 12 months... have you heard that too?

OMG it's pouring so hard outside right now! Ick! I hate the rain...

I've a video of my lo eating food on her facebook page - if you post on my facebook wall who you are (I totally forget who's who!) then I'll add you to her page so you can see it.

Just seen the vid and so cute!!! She was munching away!!! :D

It went good!! The whole BLW thing :D I gave it to her and she knew where it went, mind you she didn't swallow much, but it went in there!!! :D I had to take some pics with my web cam as my digital cam wont charge proper right now :( Anyways yay Kayleigh!! :D hehe Thanks ladies!! I think we are on the right path :D

Mum2J&K- I give Emma eggs all the time. The full blown egg with whites and all. So I sure hope we are allowed to give them to them. :haha:

I wish I could eat eggs :( I dont know they will not settle with me at all its a very bad experience.

lol I was told by my doctor only yolks until 12 months... something about allergies  When did you start giving her eggs?

-Eve

I've been giving them right off the bat at around 6 1/2 months. :haha: Googling now....

...This is the parenting magazine article on it.
https://www.parenting.com/article/Baby/Feeding/Are-Eggs-Healthy-For-Babies

And every other site I read said to be careful if food allergies run in your family. And just to keep an eye on them. But Emma has never had any sort of reaction so I think we're good. :D

aww fab mummkjnvsovnbufp398ru8975y489ui - i cant remember your username lol

looks like blw is for you!

We gave William well done scrambled egg when he was about 7 months old and he had a severe allergic reaction, so no egg for him! He had a skin prick test to confirm it a few weeks later, but was clear that he was allergic. Within less than 3 minutes of having the egg he was rubbing his face, his eyes and lips started to swell and his face when puffy and blotchy and so did his hands. Took around 40 minutes for him to return to normal. He'll be re-tested when he's 2 and there's a 50/50 chance he'll have out-grown it, really hope so!

Well, tomorrow is our 12 month milestone as its Williams birthday! Not one drop of formula :happydance::cloud9::happydance: Yay us!

And tonight we're trying some sleep training with him, his sleep has been getting worse and worse last few weeks, only settling with a feed. I've tried to make them shorter and shorter but its not working and last week I had 3 nights with less than 5 hours sleep as he was up so much :nope::nope: Not good for me or him!

So we're going to do the gradual withdrawl.....will go into him but not pick him up unless he's really distressed (so he can complain but not feel we're deserting him I hope as will stay in the room with him). If we have to pick him up it'll only be until he's calmer. Dreading it but something needs to be done as we both need more !!!!

Wish me luck!:wacko::cry::wacko:

Good luck Candyfloss, we've done some sleep training with Sophia and it worked well. i hope you get results quickly :hugs:

I never gave william anything with any thing that could cause allergy before 1 year old. We both have food allergies and didnt want him having it. Wheat is my allergy and eggs I think, so he didnt get them till after. He is only getting them now. Hard to find gluten free food for under a year also, all full of gluten and sugar some of them. I think he is ok with eggs as its in some of his food now.

Ooooh good luck! I'm almost at that point myself as LO is such a poor sleeper and it only seems to be getting worse, not better  let us know how you get on :hugs:

When I was on hol last week, my OH's friend and her partner came with us. I've not really spent a lot of time with her and she doesn't have children herself but one day while we were having lunch, she asked me how long I'd be breastfeeding for and I said I was aiming for around 2 years. She asked lots of questions about it (does it hurt? is it difficult? etc) and then went on to say how amazing she thought it was and how good it must be for Esmé. It was soooo nice to get some positive encouragement as people mostly just seem to experience negativity when BFing/extended BFing.

Love the BLW pics, Mum2, seems like it's catching on!

I'm feeling a bit better thanks.

re: eggs- Harry's only ever had well cooked scrambled eggs at around 8 months old & he was fine. I'm holding off on certain things like nuts (we have a few nut allergies in our families) & pineapple (it makes me toungue swell up & my mouth gets covered in ulcers) but I'm cool to try him with everything else :)

Candyfloss- congrats on the 12 month milestone- that's awesome.

Harry cut his first tooth last night :happydance: should I expect to be bitten at least once? lol

Hellooo...can I join? Ollie is 7 months (well, in 2 days he will be!) and we still booby feed, no formula...just booby...I'm hoping to go until he self weans... But as long as there's no major dilemmas like my milk drying up...we'll be booby feeding as long as he wants it! I've probs joined in half way through a discussion and killed it...if I have...sorry!!
