Breastfeeding Support - 6 months and beyond!

Hi Celine!

Hi Ceri! :hi: Wow! 4 years - that's wonderful!

Welcome aboard, both of you :)

xx

Celine and Rainbowgroove, welcome!

Kira had formula too during her 1st week since the hospital I was transferred to wasn't the most bf friendly. Even the lactation consultant wasn't too positive about bf. It took me about 4 or 5 days to get my milk in, but I wasn't nursing, just pumping every 3 hrs since Kira was getting cared for in the NICU. But I think the most important thing is despite early troubles some of us had, we managed to stick with it!

How can I have *just* found this group? Yeay!!! Today my son is 14 months and we have been bf-ing for 14 months after a very VERY rocky start (so technically he has been officially on boob 13,5months but I was expressing/trying since day 1)

Congratulations on 14 months so far, and welcome! :D

Hiya,
Can I join you please? My youngest daughter breastfed until she was 4, so I think I class as an extended breastfeeder :haha:
I'm pregnant again now and planning to breastfeed again.
Looking forward to chatting with you all.
Ceri xx

Amazing! 4 years, wow, that is great! Welcome too! :D

My daughter had formula too. She was a preemie (not by much) and jaundiced, so they explained the more she ate the better she would be since it would get the bilirubin out of her system. I wanted her to get better so we finger/tube fed her formula with my colostrum I pumped mixed in. I pumped every 2 hours after trying to nurse her every 2 hours... the first few days until my milk came in I slept maybe 30-40 minutes in between everything. It was rough but since my milk came in she was only on breastmilk, but had quite a few bottles of EBM a day so I could keep track of how much she was eating, and from 2-7 months she was just boob :) I finally got her taking a bottle of EBM again, so OH and I are having a real date (our second one ever) Saturday night, while my Mum comes to our house to watch the kids. I'm excited but feel sick as I have only left her 3 times. Once for 10 minutes, once for 20 minutes and once for 2 hours (nearly killed me there! lol) so Im nervous about 6-7 hours, as it will take us 45 minutes to even get to town :( Anyways, I feel like I am writing a novel here :haha: so I shall end my post...

Oh I have an interview tomorrow evening for a child to look after :) My leave isn't over until November 22nd, but I don't want to return to work so I put an ad out for childcare in my home. I live in a smaller village, so Im not too sure about the demand for it, but this lady has a 1 year old little girl :) I think it will be rough until we are all used to it, since they are so close in age and young, but it will be nice as they grow. I'm just excited I might be able to stay home with my kids a few years more :) Here I am going on and on again LOL

done :haha:

 LOL

Oh my, that wasn't the huge post I thought it would be!

Mark is painting Kayleigh's room tonight that she won't sleep in for another few months, but at least it's getting done now. Pink is the color with butterflies and flowers :D I will post pictures once we get the 3rd coat on and it all done up :D

Well I near mad a doc collapse in Matunriuty last night from saying I still breastfed her reactong in her zambabwi accent was "OMG" then asked how old he was and then her jaw hit the floor. I didnt know what way to take that so I said its not unusial you know and the midwife chimed in and backed me up telling the doc that people feed to 5 years ! so she shut up, Then before I left I asked them if they hadnt seen many breastfeeders by her reaction and midwife gave me encouragement and other asked if i have not given him a bottle and how I still have milk. (docs dont have a clue do they?) midwife said I was paving the way for others. Zambabwi was a but nicer when I was leaving about it i think she was just in shock. Why am I not shocked in this hospital . But they have some breastfeeders they say and i told them about the ward I was in last time and people asking me why I bothered. Midwife was for breastfeeding and the first one I met that was!

got anti biotucs and i am going to puke on them. I have a bad UTI which came on really fast and they where for keeping me there only I had to look after toddler and oh with broken leg. I aint allowed to do a thing though as my BP was high and heart rate.

Mum2J- I had such a hard time getting Kira to take EBM from a bottle. I had to return to work part time when she was 2 1/2 months and it was a struggle... one of the days she went 6 hours without eating! Just a couple weeks ago she started refusing bottles again, but with her being older it wasn't a big deal. She now drinks EBM from a cup while I'm a work.

Try to enjoy your date! Thats a great idea to watch another LO instead of working. A friend of mine is a nanny and she's able to take her son to work with her while she nannies for another family.

Dragonfly- how irky! Atleast the midwife is supportive.

Well you make sure you take it easy and get better! Those darn UTI's aren't good when pregnant! It's a shame a doctor would have that type of reaction! I would be praising you to high heavens if it were me, I mean we need to keep a positive attitude towards extended breastfeeding :) Good thing there is at least one midwife there pro breastfeeding! Hope you get her when you have your LO!

I hope to enjoy, I might worry the whole time lol...

I'm glad Kayleigh takes one now! It makes me feel better about leaving her a little while. 2 and a half months old? Oh wow... makes me feel sick to my tummy to think of leaving Kayleigh now, let alone then... I mean if we have to, we have to, but I just wish Mat leave was 2 years at 100% paid lol...

Mum2J- I think the US has some of the worst policies on maternity leave. My job was only held for me for 12 weeks (almost 2 of which I wasted by being 10 days late, LOL) and on top of that I wasn't even paid! When I returned to work I realized I could not work full time- it felt soooo wrong leaving such a little baby and Kira didn't adjust well at all. My boss actually fired me for 24 hours and then had a change of heart and let me return part time :dohh: But just think of how spoiled Kayleigh will be with your mom watching her!!

Thats shocking! I work for the NHS and I had 6 months paid, then 3 on SMP (can't even remember what this was, maybe £400 a month?) then I took another 2 weeks unpaid so had 9 month off with William, and still hated leaving him! No wonder you struggled to leave Kira at 2 and a half months!

Williams had a stinking cold for a few days (only his 3rd one, not bad!) and has been really snotty until today, but he's just been sick at bedtime as he a had a coughing bout :nope: Poor monster. Gave him some of his asthma inhalor but don't think it was asthma as such, but it'll loosen anything there to make it easier to cough. Don't like him being poorly!

Hi girlies

Woohoo it was Kaiden's first birthday yesterday. If someone had told me a year ago that I would be giving him the boobie until now I would never of believed it. But we are both still loving it and have no plans to stop any time soon. :wohoo: He does have an appt with the HV with this week which I'm not looking forward to. Its for jags & I'm not sure what she will make of us BF and that he still wakes during the night & is getting quite fussy about feeding himself now. Def not going to tell her we still co-sleep :haha:

Mum2J - how was your date? Hope you were able to relax for a little while & enjoy it. Easier said than done though - I know!

Dragonfly - hope you are feeling better now.

Happy first birthday Kaiden! :cake: And happy 12 month milestone to you both! :happydance:

xx

I wonder why William when he goes to his grans eats like a horse when fed and here he will nit pick at his dinner. She puts out dinner, sausages or mine and spud and he eats his and goes for everyone elses, I cant get him to do that??I know when I was young I ended up in grans for food lol maybe he is the same.

Difficult one! How long exactly and how long can she go between feeds? I'd be tempted to cluster feed her before I left then feed her when I got back. Does she have any solids yet? They could offer some solids, if its something liquidy like yoghurt then she wouldn't be too thirsty/hungry when you return maybe?

x

i need to leave at 7pm and il be back by 10pm. hubby tried yogurt last time but she still cried. i do feed her as much as poss before i go but she still wakes wanting boobie
I feel so bad for leaving her and letting her cry but I need to be away from her ( I teach dance one night a week and I really really really dont want to give it up - its the only non baby thing I do.)

She does sip a little from a cup so il get hubby to try a cup tomo night too and we've brought her bedtime forward a bit - she was asleep from 7.15pm tonight so we'll see how long she'll sleep for.

thanks! xxx

Happy Birthday Kaiden!!

Well, I didn't go :( I couldn't leave her... lol... not yet, not for that long and not that far away. OH didn't mind, he went out on his 4 wheeler for a while while Mom and I cooked supper home. I did have two glasses of wine though :) Which was nice for a change! :) Been over 2 years since I had a drop! I don't drink much, but lastnight I was in the mood. No date yet, lol... but soon, I will make myself!

Its been a long time since i had a drop of drink to and will be another long time to come. I know at xmas I can have one when breastfeeding but I think I want like 10 not one so no point.

Gills-
Kayleigh refused a bottle for so long....5 months! Then one day she took one, and a soother for the first time out of nowhere! She was going on 7 months. I would go out and have OH try to give your LO a bottle... make sure you are not home, but close enough you don't have to worry about LO being fussy and crying for long :)

I wanted 10+ hahaha but luckily stopped, so I felt good this morning.

Did you give William a bottle at all?
