Canadian Moms & Moms to be!

ya, sara I am ok if I get at least 6 hours uninterrupted... With Peyton I was getting like 5 hours broken. I dont fall asleep easily so every time he woke up i'd be up for an hour bettween feeding him and trying to fall back asleep. The co-sleeping doesn't work for us, tom sleeps with the tv on so I cant even have the baby in our room because it wakes them up.

yeah i am getting about 8 hours broken now. so its not too bad. J wakes frequently, but only for 5 minutes and we both fall right back to sleep, so im not up for hours - i wouldn't be able to cope with that either.

Anberlin woke up at 3:30am the other night, so I fed her thinking she'd fall right back to sleep like she normally does. Nope. Once she finished her midnight snack she decided to start dancing and singing to herself at 4:00am for two consecutive hours before she (and we) fell back to sleep. Cute singing, just not so much at 4:00am.

Broken sleep is my life. B used to sleep 6 hours, wake to eat and then another 3 or 4 hours. Now she wakes up a lot through the night. Next baby I am waking them after a feed to put to bed awake and offering a soother between the 4 to 6 weeks rather then at 8.

Lisa - j got a soother on day 2! we were still in the hospital. if you think you have a baby with a high suck need - i wouldn't wait LOL

J is still waking lots, but i have stopped offering boob. she needs to learn to eat during the day and i am not an all night all you can eat buffet. she is SLOWLY getting better.

I pushed the soother from birth but Alia never took to it. Some babies are just stubborn!!! haha

yes they are! i got lucky with the soother i guess. but that just means eventually im gonna have to break her from it! its mostly used at night or in the car now, but if she gets whiny i pop it in for a couple minutes of peace and quiet LOL

Peyton got a soother the day he was born. Jasmine barely used one. I was told they are fine for bf babies too and we never had a prob.

Claire refused the soother too. She'd take it so long as I'd place my finger on it. The second I'd remove it she'd spit it out. :haha: Defeated the purpose so I never bothered with it again.

I'm glad I never had to break the soother habit though!

Im glad I don't have to worry about getting rid of it but sometimes I would appreciate it lol.
I'm not immediately offering boob at night and try to get her to go back to sleep on her own but most times it doesn't work. B is definately a very stubborn, strong-willed baby. She knows what she wants and has her mind set from the start.

Same with Alia!!! I'm hoping to have an easy-going baby this time around haha (one can dream!)

I loved the soother for Andrew and while it was a little hard getting rid of it (at 16 months) I think it was totally worth it. I've already sanitized soothers for the twins hospital bag. I don't want to cause nipple confusion, but until I have tandem feeding mastered, I'll need something to hold the other baby over with.

Sometimes I wish Anberlin would have taken a soother. The other two took one no problem and I had them completely broken from it by 15 months. But Anberlin took to her thumb at 3 months. I don't know how I'm going to break the thumb.

Sara we had the same issues with Hannah even though she was FF, she wanted to eat all night long and play all day. We cut down slowly on what she was getting at night (easier to do with FF since I could see what was in the bottle) so she'd take more during the day. Honestly though? Once we got to a certain point we found that offering her that little bit and cutting her off pissed her off more than just trying to get her back to sleep. Good luck :hugs:

Soothers are great when they are little and a curse when they are older  I am glad Hannah took one--she was an extremely sucky baby and I think she did truly need it. It wasn't that bad for us to get rid of but that's because we waited until she was fully ready to do it, which wasn't until Sept. of this year. Since she only had it for sleep times we really weren't to worried about (though we got a lot of comments from family over it! which was frustrating). We took it from her during the days around 15 months I think? It was hard the first few times we were out in public but really it was more us than her

good but busy day here (well busy but in a good relaxing sort of way) :)

i got ton's of sleep in the first 4-5 months... its been the last 3-4 that have been hell. my kid is ASS backwards! and because she slept so good for the first little while, i let all the bad habits happen cause "hey ho who cares, im getting lots of sleep" now im paying BIG time. i will also offer a bottle of bm right from the beginning and after a few months maybe do a bottle of formula every couple of days so i know she'll drink it if i need them too.

I've been hearing horror stories about this. My son Daniel is 5 months old and has been sleeping through the night since he was 6 weeks old. My mom-friends have told me their kids slept through the night right away but starting the wake up shtick at about 3 to 4 months. So I'm always paranoid that my turn is coming. I need my sleep! Whenever he has a bad night I always think that it's starting but the next night is good again. What were the bad habits, if you don't mind me asking?

Oh, and I'm new. I am a new Canadian mom who is Ontarian-raised but now resides in Manitoba. I'm 28 and DH is 30. Our 3rd wedding anniversary is coming up in about a week. I can't get online a lot because Daniel is a social baby and doesn't like being ignored. He naps 3 times a day about 45 minutes at a time. But he sleeps 11 to 12 hours at night. Or, I think he does. He doesn't cry when he wakes up. I usually find him playing in his crib so I'm never sure when he wakes up. Sometimes I think he must wake up at night to play but I sleep through it.

Welcome starry night!

Oh Peyton was easy to break of his soother and he used it constantly... I just started taking it away in the day etc and we got rid of it in a week... He hasnt had one in over a month.

I was told and have read many articals that soothers won't cause nipple confusion... And tbh nothing really did for Peyton, he had a bottle at birth, his soother... bf exclusively till 3 weeks and then had a bottle of formula every day and we never had issues.

I like to joke that Daniel was born with a soother in his mouth. lol My original plan had been to exclusively bf and right from the start I could tell he liked to comfort suck. I never wanted to be "on demand" at all times so in went the soother and he took to it like a duck to water. Bf'ing didn't work out (he wasn't thriving even after seeing a lactation consultant) so now I exclusively FF. No matter how much I put into his bottles he is always angry that it is empty. So I pop in the soother and he is happy again. Though when he is really angry and WANTS to be angry he will tear it out so he can't be comforted. That's where the rocking chair comes in! His nemesis.

i agree joss that they say to avoid lots of stuff so not to cause nipple confusion... but i really doubt that most kids will get it. i think the odd baby does and so they tell people to avoid stuff like the plague. im 100% sure that nothing would have cause the confusion but i was so scared with J that it would. now i know better.

i don't think i offered J to nurse at all last night. i maybe did once - its hard to remember cause often im doing it in my sleep. LOL im going to try to not offer at all now. she is def nursing more during the day these last few days, but still not eating much solids.

Hi Starry Night! there is a 4 month sleep regression - thats where J's sleep went to crap... so if your past it, you might get lucky!!

no everyone here DOES tell you to use the soother... even the mw's say it is ok because it helps develope the sucking strength and its said to help with lowering the risk of SIDS>

I was told to use one but I was also FF from the start and they knew that when they told me to use it :) We'll definitely be buying soothers this time and taking them to the hospital with us in case Rhys is a sucky baby like his sister :)

:hi: Welcome Starrynight!

I'm Vickie, mommy to Hannah, pregnant with #2 and married to Stan :)
