January 2020 Garnets!!!

Hi robo!

No worries or pressures to post MommyPrice! I do hope everything is okay with the baby and that you are recovering well from surgery.

Hope all is well with your ultrasound Mommyprice!
One of my best friends moved to Roanoke, VA when i was 12. We wrote back and forth a lot. Haven't heard of that city since then so fun you live near there!
I am from Utah (USA for those international)

Okay so I love shopping. Particularly baby shopping. It's probably a problem.

Opinion query: are Moses baskets worth it? I LOVE Moses baskets but since I've never had a baby and I only want to purchase baby stuff I know I'll absolutely love and use, I'm asking you lovely ladies what you think.

I live in a three story townhome (the livable part is on the second and third floors), and I was thinking about buying/ registering for a second bassinet/ Moses basket with stand to put in the living room. The nursery and the master bedroom are both on the third floor. I do plan on buying/ registering for either a SnuggleMe or Dockatot (I'm leaning toward the SnuggleMe for various reasons though I know I'd use both). I am going to buy a baby swing, but I'm wondering about those early months and making sure the baby is sleeping flat on her back mostly. I have a big dog, who honestly will probably stay away from the baby, and a cat who is the most curious cat I've ever met and it wouldn't matter if we put the baby up on top of the kitchen cabinets - he will find her. Long story short, would it be worth the money (I know it's aesthetically worth it because the baskets I'm looking at are gorgeous) to have a second bassinet in the living room so I don't always have to take the baby upstairs for naps?

And go!

I'd get a second basket! We're getting one of those bedside cots (where the baby can sleep right next to you, and you can see/touch baby without having to sit up in bed). They'll have a crib for their room for even they're older, but as we now live in a house with stairs, we're investing in a basinet for downstairs as well. Make it easy on yourself!

Thanks MommyPrice. Yeah, we are planning on getting a Halo Bassinet for our bedroom followed by the Guava Family travel crib for when baby is too big but under a year and then we're doing a crib-less nursery/ floor bed with cute wooden house frame and the safe sleep crib mattress in the nursery. But I realized pretty quickly that there's virtually no safe sleep spaces in our main living space! Thanks for the input!

Oh gosh I can’t believe how organised you are! Even with my last pregnancy at 17 weeks I’d only brought a few little bits! I had no idea what big stuff to get!
I’m from East Sussex in the UK - in the UK we don’t have baby showers really or register for anything (which is a shame I bet it saves so much money!).

I would maybe hold off getting a second one until you see how baby likes the first one...only reason I say that is because DS *hated* his Moses basket and it was a struggle to get him into it even at bedtime. He definitely would never have napped in it so a second one would have just been a waste.

I am in Vancouver Canada. :)

red_head showers don't necessarily save money. Sure, grandparents and some family members will most likely buy one or two big ticket items, but most people buy things not on the registry, much to the frustration of many a first-time parent. I anticipate getting a lot of blankets and size 0-3 baby clothes. I'm hoping to steer people toward my registry though because even though we live in a three-story townhome, it's still only a two bedroom with limited closet space. I'm only organized because I've wanted kids for so long that I've had a lot of time to research things and have a pretty darn good idea of what baby stuff I'd actually really want, like and use. I might get lucky with my first baby though since it's been so long since anyone on my side of the family has had kids (my youngest niece just turned 4 and the next youngest is about to turn 11) and they are all excited. While DH's side is super happy for us (with the exception of my MIL - just don't know in her case and certainly don't expect to be gifted anything), they aren't the wealthiest people and my SIL just had her second baby in March. Her registry hardly had anything on it though because after your first baby, some moms don't even have showers, or they have what we call "sprinkles" especially if they are having a different gender. I'm just glad they are all supportive, regardless of what they can buy and I'm bummed that they won't really get to participate in Baby Girl's life because they all live in a different state.

I live in Tacoma Washington. Fit_Mama we're not that far apart!

Id skip the basket. Get a playpen or something similar with longer term use.

We already have everything for this baby. I bought it all in the last 6 weeks. :)

Co foster - I would have said get a second basket, but that’s actually a good idea to get a playpen with a bassinet attachment instead. You’ll get a lot more use out of it that way.

Robo - welcome here!

Sophie - cool that you’ll find out if they change your due date on July 11th. It’s good that we are “close” to due date buddies, anyway. Haha.

MommyPrice - totally makes sense that you’re feeling extra cautious after your surgery. I hope the scan coming up offers the reassurance you need.

Afm - I’m from Canada.
I feel like complete and utter crap today! I slept in until almost 10, then had to lie back down as soon as I finished breakfast until lunch. I ate lunch, and then had a 3 hour nap...and now I STILL can barely keep my eyes open. The fatigue has definitely hit with a vengeance. :( Hubby is busy with work this evening, but I’m thankful he was home during the day so I could rest. I feel a bit down that I am wasting this summer feeling so crappy.

Ah Literati I bet it'll pass before the summer really kicks in. Or at least, positive thoughts right?

I am planning on getting the Guava Family Lotus travel crib. Maybe I'll get the bassinet kit as well. It's definitely not as pretty as the Moses basket but I can travel with it in the first 6 months so that's something. Don't know if I'll do any traveling in the first six months but at least then I'll have it. What do you all think? The Moses basket would definitely be a stay at home thing. I could probably take it on short trips or to the park but why?

That would be a bit much to carry baby, diaper bag, stroller and moses basket....

Theres a whole lot you really dont NEED. By need I mean things that look and feel nice but dont actually make a huge difference in the end.
Like for me, a changing table. Useless. Change the baby on the bed, floor, couch, etc. Lay down a mat and call it done.

However, everyone’s different! So many people told me they never ended up using their change table, but we have used ours every single day for the past 4+ years! We sometimes change on the floor (especially in the early days when they need diaper changes constantly) but for the most part I prefer using the change table. Our crib, on the other hand, has hardly ever been used!! Haha. But there was no way to predict that. You just have to make your best judgment and hope for the best.

Co foster - thanks. I am trying to tell myself that I’ll probably feel better by August at least.

I agree on the crib. We co sleep though. I still get a crib for the naps at toddler years but it collects dust otherwise.

We're not even doing a crib. Crib mattress on the floor (the safe sleep mattress is off of the floor with air vents and a wood frame) to give Baby more autonomy but that'll mainly be used for naps.

We never used cribs really. My oldest used one from about 9 months up but my 2nd and 3rd didn’t. With breastfeeding it was just much easier to have the baby right next to me in bed. Though this time I will want to get the little tiny cot that you can lay on the bed next to you. I was horrible and let my kids sleep in my bed until they were old enough to get their own toddler bed.
Anyone else feel like time is dragging by? I keep thinking I am between 7-8 weeks then remember I’m still in my 6th week. Almost 6+6 but what on earth? How am I only this far along?? Weirder I found out at 4+5 so not like I found out super early. I think this nausea must make it drag on and on.

And those of you in Canada, have you been keeping up with the NBA finals? Not sure how big it is there but awesome that the Toronto Raptors are leading against the Warriors. Sorry if anyone is a Warriors fan lol
